Dublin City Council and the organizers said they were working on technical changes; the connection reopened four days later with reported safeguards. The pause did not mean the project ended: the New York sculpture later moved to Philadelphia, and Dublin remains on the official Portals location list.
Why the New York–Dublin Portal was paused
The installations launched on May 8, 2024, connecting Manhattan and Dublin’s O’Connell Street through a two-way livestream. On May 14, Dublin City Council said most interactions had been positive, but some inappropriate images and behavior had gone viral. The council said it was implementing technical solutions, as reported at the time by People.

The issue was not that the connection itself had failed. The concern was how some people were using a public, live camera link. The Portals makers said their aim was to open a window between distant places and cultures and allow people to interact freely, while Joe Callahan, identified by People as Director of Portals Organization and CEO of Sansar, said the project should remain family-friendly.
What changed when the feed reopened
The feed had reopened by May 21, after a closure WIRED described as lasting four days. Its report described three kinds of safeguards introduced at the time:

#1 Best Overall
- 5x6cm style shot glass
- Measures 2.25" tall and 1.8" in diameter
- Souvenir from New York city
- Makes a great gift or a nice collector's item
- Physical separation: A fence kept visitors several feet from the New York Portal.
- Camera-based response: Organizers said the livestream would blur at both ends if someone climbed on the Portal or blocked its camera.
- Restricted hours: WIRED reported operating hours of 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern time, equivalent to 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. in Dublin.
These were measures reported at the May 2024 reopening, not confirmation of current rules. WIRED also reported that the sculptures stood 3.4 meters tall, citing the organizers. Read WIRED’s account of the reopening.

The New York sculpture was later relocated to Philadelphia, according to an October 2024 report by The Irish Post. That move was separate from the temporary suspension of the New York–Dublin feed in May. At the time, the report said Dublin’s stream was expected to rotate among Dublin, Vilnius, Lublin, and Philadelphia.
Is the Dublin Portal still open?
The official Portals locations page lists Dublin, along with Philadelphia, Vilnius, Lublin, Ipswich, Manila, and Piauí. It does not list New York, and the page does not give a current Dublin schedule. Dublin’s continued presence on the location list does not establish its opening hours or confirm that the stream is live at a particular time.
The council’s explanation of the 2024 pause is available here through People’s contemporaneous report, which reproduced the council’s statement. The official Portals site is the source for the current location list; a present-day Dublin schedule is not stated there.
