In My Old Ass, a teenager’s encounter with her 39-year-old self turns a carefree summer into a test of whether she should trust the future she has been warned about. The trailer’s sharpest romantic warning is specific: Disney+’s official summary says the older Elliott tells her younger self to avoid anyone named Chad. It is a hook, not the whole story.
What happens in the My Old Ass trailer?
Prime Video’s official synopsis sets up the encounter on Elliott’s 18th birthday: after a mushroom trip, free-spirited Elliott, played by Maisy Stella, comes face-to-face with her wisecracking 39-year-old self, played by Aubrey Plaza. The older Elliott’s warnings make the younger one reconsider family, love, and the transformative summer ahead.

The trailer’s romance tease is less a general instruction to avoid love than a warning about one person: Disney+’s summary says the future Elliott tells her to “avoid anyone named Chad.” That gives the younger Elliott an unsettling piece of advice without explaining what she should do with it—or why.
Who are the Elliotts, and what is at stake?
The younger Elliott is a bisexual teenager living on a small Canadian cranberry farm who wants to leave, according to Associated Press coverage. The older version brings a perspective the teenager does not yet have, urging her to value parts of her life even as she looks toward what comes next. Their conversation puts the trailer’s love warning inside a broader tension between escaping the present and recognizing what matters in it.

Is My Old Ass only a romance?
No. The official Prime Video synopsis frames it as a coming-of-age story about family, love, and a summer changed by the meeting between the two versions of Elliott. Chad is a memorable detail in that premise, but the available official summaries do not present the film as solely a story about avoiding a romance.
Director Megan Park described the idea to the Associated Press as “a story about a young woman in conversation with her older self.” The AP characterized the film as funny while also having emotional impact; that is the outlet’s description, not a guarantee of how every viewer will respond.
