The Prince Charles Cinema canceled the planned public London premiere of The Last Screenwriter in June 2024 after audience feedback raised concern about artificial intelligence being used in place of writers. The film was directed by Peter Luisi and credited ChatGPT 4.0 for its screenplay, but it was not an entirely AI-made movie: Luisi supplied the premise and guided the generation and selection of screenplay material.
What happened to the planned premiere?
The Prince Charles Cinema, in London’s West End, had planned to host the world premiere on a Sunday in June 2024. It canceled the public screening after receiving audience feedback. The cinema’s statement, quoted by The Guardian on June 20, 2024, said the response highlighted “the strong concern held by many of our audience on the use of AI in place of a writer,” adding that the issue spoke to a wider industry concern.
The Daily Beast reported that ticket refunds were confirmed by email and that a private screening for the cast and crew would still take place in London. That private event was separate from the canceled public premiere; the public screening did not proceed at the cinema.
Why did the cinema cancel it?
The cinema attributed its decision to audience feedback about AI replacing writers. The Daily Beast reported that Luisi said the theater had received 200 complaints: 40 after the initial promotion and another 160 overnight. Those numbers are Luisi’s reported account, not an independently audited tally. They describe feedback to this event, not a representative survey of Londoners or the wider public.

The dispute also touched a broader debate over AI and writing labor in film. The Guardian noted that protections for writers in relation to AI had been a key demand in the preceding Hollywood writers’ strike. The cinema’s statement explains its stated reason for canceling this screening; it does not establish that all audience members, or the film industry as a whole, shared one view.
Was The Last Screenwriter really written by ChatGPT?
The Guardian described the Swiss production as directed by Peter Luisi, starring Nicholas Pople, and credited on screenwriting to “ChatGPT 4.0.” It follows a celebrated screenwriter whose position is challenged by a cutting-edge AI writing system that appears to match or surpass his ability. The credit should be preserved as reported: the Guardian noted that OpenAI launched GPT-4o in May 2024, but that does not establish that GPT-4o was the system used for the screenplay.

Luisi’s account of the writing process, reported by The Daily Beast on June 18, 2024, gives a more precise picture than the shorthand “written by AI.” He said he originated the idea and prompted ChatGPT to develop a feature-film plot about a screenwriter realizing he was less capable than AI. He then asked it to name characters, create outlines and write scenes. Luisi selected material and sometimes shortened it.
So the screenplay used generated text, but the reported process also involved human choices: the premise, prompts, selection and editing. The completed film was a human-directed production with actors and a crew—not a movie made entirely by AI.

How did the director respond?
Luisi told The Daily Beast that early critics did not know enough about the project and said, “I feel like the film is not at all saying ‘this is how movies should be.’” He described it as a project asking how good a film written by AI could be, rather than an endorsement of replacing screenwriters. He also said, “It is here, and it’s here to stay. We just have to deal with it. We can’t ignore it, as much as we would like to.”
That was Luisi’s interpretation of the film’s intent; it is distinct from the cinema’s stated concern about AI taking the place of writers. The cancellation concerned whether to host a public screening after feedback, not a finding about how the screenplay was made or a verdict on the film’s artistic merits.
