Cubic Motion’s 2019 demonstration showed how marker-less facial tracking, machine learning and live rendering could make a computer-generated character respond to people in the room—not just replay a pre-rendered scene.
What does it mean to become a CGI character in real time?
A performer supplies facial expressions and body movement; cameras and software track those actions, translate them into animation controls and apply them to a digital character. A real-time engine renders the result immediately, so a director or audience can see the character perform while the actor is still moving.
That is different from a conventional post-production workflow in which motion is recorded first and artists refine the animation later. Real-time capture makes live direction, iteration and interaction possible. In the 2019 demonstration, a remote performer delivered scripted lines and then addressed individual spectators, creating an exchange that could not have been a fixed cutscene. Futurism’s report described the audience’s reaction; Digital Trends’ technical account explained the capture approach.
How does the live avatar pipeline work?
- Perform: An actor provides the facial expressions and body movement that will drive the character.
- Track: Cameras and computer-vision software observe the performer. Cubic Motion’s facial approach was marker-less, avoiding visible facial markers.
- Solve: Machine-learning and animation systems interpret the observations and convert them into facial and body controls.
- Retarget: The solved performance is mapped onto the digital character.
- Render: A real-time engine displays the character immediately, allowing the performer to respond to direction or people in the room.
Epic Games describes real-time performance capture as combining body and facial capture with immediate retargeting to a CG character. Its professional ecosystem has included Cubic Motion, 3Lateral, Digital Domain, Vicon and Unreal Engine. Epic’s explanation of the ecosystem provides context for how capture, character technology and rendering fit together.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What made Cubic Motion’s 2019 demonstration different?
The notable detail was not simply that a face could be animated. Cubic Motion’s marker-less tracking used computer vision and machine learning to follow facial components, including eye blinks and pupil movement. Digital Trends reported that the system drove a finished render at about 60 frames per second in the demonstration. That figure describes the reported real-time rendering, not a guarantee of capture performance for every setup.
Traditional marker-based facial capture can make some fine details harder to record directly; the Digital Trends account contrasted Cubic Motion’s eye tracking with approaches that put markers on the face. The system’s live output also changed the performance dynamic: because the character appeared as the actor performed, the actor could engage with the audience instead of merely supplying material for animators to assemble later.

Can you do this with an iPhone?
An iPhone X-series device is a consumer-level approximation, not a substitute for Cubic Motion’s professional capture rig. Its front-facing depth-sensing system enabled facial self-scanning for Animoji and Memoji-style experiences, but the reporting describes this as lower fidelity than the professional system. It is suitable for experimenting with face-driven avatars; it does not establish equivalent body capture, facial detail or a studio-quality real-time production pipeline.
How much does professional real-time facial capture cost?
Digital Trends reported that a high-fidelity camera rig in this class would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. That is a reported scale for specialized professional hardware, not a current quote or a complete price for every Persona installation. Persona was a professional system that companies could license, and an operational production setup also depended on software and the wider capture and rendering pipeline. The cited reporting does not give a universal package price.

What is the difference between Cubic Motion and MetaHuman?
Cubic Motion refers to the capture technology and company behind Persona: its system tracked an actor’s performance and translated it onto a digital counterpart in real time. Epic Games announced on March 12, 2020, that Cubic Motion had joined Epic, integrating its technology into Epic’s digital-human work alongside 3Lateral and Unreal Engine. Epic’s announcement describes Persona as an end-to-end hardware and software solution.
MetaHuman Creator is a different part of that broader ecosystem. Epic’s 2021 announcement presented it as a browser-based tool for creating high-fidelity digital humans, with a stated target of reducing creation from weeks or months to less than an hour. Epic also described Live Link Face and other performance-capture integrations for animation. In short, MetaHuman Creator concerns making a digital human; Cubic Motion’s Persona concerned capturing and driving a performance. Epic’s MetaHuman Creator announcement explains the creation tool and its intended role.

What can real-time digital humans make possible?
The 2019 demonstration pointed toward more responsive game characters and live digital performances. The same basic capability could support a performer controlling an avatar, an interactive character responding to spectators, or faster iteration during production. Futurism also discussed more speculative possibilities, such as digital tutors or an athletic digital version of a user; those were suggestions about potential applications, not evidence that the capture system was a consumer product for those purposes.
