The “copy and paste Latina” trend was prominent on TikTok in October 2022. The criticism was not that Latinas wore lashes, lip liner, straight hair, or gold jewelry. It was that one polished beauty aesthetic could be presented as what Latinas look like—turning a varied identity into a narrow template and making people seem interchangeable.
What did “copy and paste Latina” mean?
The phrase described a perceived, repeatable glam look, not an objective category of Latina identity. Videos commonly featured long, straight dark hair, full or highly polished makeup, defined brows, prominent lashes, brown or overlined lips, and gold jewelry. Critics also noted that many examples centered lighter skin and features closer to Eurocentric beauty ideals. Those are observations about the videos, not traits that define Latina people. The look’s details varied, and participants used the phrase approvingly, ironically, and critically. People en Español and Refinery29 both describe the look and the debate around it.
How did the trend spread?
Refinery29 places the trend’s emergence under a viral TikTok sound in early October 2022. Short, roughly one-minute beauty tutorials showed creators building the look; stitches, reactions, jokes, and videos from people saying they did or did not fit the description widened the conversation. The available accounts do not establish a single inventor or formal launch. It is more accurate to describe the trend as something that developed through TikTok’s remix culture. People en Español published its critique on October 25, 2022, and Refinery29 updated its coverage on November 3, 2022. Refinery29’s account details the timeline.

It makes difference look like sameness
“Copy and paste” suggests that women who share a hairstyle or makeup look are replicas: interchangeable, unoriginal, or basic. Applied to an identity, the phrase can make a complex set of histories and experiences seem reducible to a recognizable face. It treats one image as a default
Latina and Latine communities include people with different national, regional, racial, class, gender, sexuality, and diaspora experiences. A shared cultural identity does not require a shared appearance. When a repeated social-media image is treated as the typical or authentic Latina look, Afro-Latina, Indigenous, darker-skinned, curly-haired, non-glam, queer, disabled, plus-size, and otherwise nonconforming people can be made to seem like exceptions. The problem is not that any one creator wears the look; it is the narrowing effect of presenting it as a general rule.
How do colorism and representation enter the debate?
Colorism is a preference system that advantages some skin tones, hair textures, and facial features over others within racialized communities. Critics interviewed by Refinery29 observed that many trend videos centered lighter-skinned girls and straight, silky hair. Some creators described younger or more melanated users comparing themselves with that image and wondering whether they had the “right” skin tone or hair type. Those accounts document criticism and personal reactions; they are not a controlled study proving the trend independently caused measurable psychological harm. UC Davis scholar Katlin Marisol Sweeney-Romero connects the look to a historical “Hollywood Latin Look” that can essentialize Latinas as non-Black and non-Indigenous. In that framing, a narrow image may increase visibility for some Latina creators while limiting which Latinas are readily recognized or celebrated. Refinery29 also includes an Afro-Latina creator’s account of seeing earlier stereotypes recur after her own features, skin tone, and hair had been rejected. These are arguments and lived experiences, not proof that every creator or viewer intended exclusion. UC Davis’s 2025 presentation description revisits the trend’s representational significance.

What is the connection to Chicana and regional styles?
The look did not arise in a cultural vacuum, and it should not be treated as a newly invented, generic Latina aesthetic. Mitú coverage points to Mexican-American chola culture as an important precursor, including a creator’s description of a style rooted in Los Angeles Mexican-Chicano culture and passed down through mothers, aunts, and grandmothers. Refinery29 also reports criticism that styles associated with Chicanas, New York “around-the-way” girls, and Florida chongas can be consumed, detached from their histories, and repackaged as a generic internet trend. These are reported connections, not evidence that all glam makeup came from one community. “Chola,” “chonga,” “Chicana,” and “Latina” are not interchangeable labels, and similar makeup choices can arise without a conscious reference to any one tradition. Is the makeup itself offensive?
No. Straight hair, lashes, lip liner, contour, foundation, and gold jewelry are not inherently offensive. Latina creators can share, reinterpret, exaggerate, or reject beauty traditions, and people can enjoy glam makeup without making a claim about ethnicity. A tutorial becomes more contentious when it presents a styling choice as the default or authentic Latina appearance. Conversely, mocking women for wearing the look can reproduce the same flattening by treating them as a stereotype rather than individuals.
Intent matters, but it does not settle the question
Some participants treated the trend as harmless fun or a makeup tutorial; others used it ironically or heard it as a restrictive label. Meaning depends partly on who uses the phrase, whether they are self-describing or mocking, whether cultural context is acknowledged, and how the audience receives it. Refinery29 reports that some participants reconsidered their initial dismissal after seeing younger users compare themselves with the standard. That does not establish universal harm; it shows why a creator’s playful intent alone cannot determine how a label lands. Refinery29

Is it cultural appropriation?
It can raise appropriation concerns when a style associated with particular communities is stripped of its history, treated as disposable, renamed as a generic trend, or rewarded on people who are not those communities while its wearers are mocked. Identity claims made to gain attention from an aesthetic can raise a separate concern. But the available coverage does not support calling every participant’s makeup appropriation: many were Latina creators taking part in an intracultural debate. A later identity controversy is a separate case
In a 2024 report, mitúTV covered allegations that TikToker Una Gutierrez was a white woman named Brooklyn Chipman, and described comments from a man identifying himself as her father about her Latina style and possible Mexican ancestry. The report presents allegations and commentary, not independently established facts. It illustrates why people distinguish wearing a Latina-associated aesthetic from claiming Latina identity; it does not prove that the 2022 trend as a whole began with deception. mitúTV’s report

How can creators describe the look without making it a rule?
- Name the specific makeup technique or style rather than calling it what Latinas look like.
- When a style draws on a particular community or regional tradition, acknowledge that context instead of presenting it as a universal formula.
- Show varied Latina beauty and avoid implying that skin tone, hair texture, or facial features determine who belongs.
- Do not shame people who enjoy the look, and do not frame people who do not fit it as less authentic.
The conversation is best understood as a double bind: women who fit the look may be dismissed as unoriginal or stereotypical, while women who do not may feel excluded from the image of Latina beauty. The remedy is not to police individual makeup choices, but to resist treating one appearance as the measure of an entire community.
