Taylor Swift’s reported reason for performing Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” was to pay tribute to Michigan artists during her 2011 tour dates in the state. At her Grand Rapids show, she also covered Uncle Kracker’s “Smile.” That explanation comes from contemporary reporting, not a direct statement from Swift about her personal motivation.
Where and when did Swift perform “Lose Yourself”?
Swift performed the song at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan, during the Speak Now tour in late July 2011. Contemporary coverage published around August 5 described the covers as part of her Michigan tour dates. Complex reported the performance as a tribute to Eminem and Uncle Kracker; Entertainment Tonight also covered the Grand Rapids appearance.

Why was Eminem’s song part of the tribute?
“Lose Yourself” is closely associated with Eminem and Detroit, making it a fitting choice for a Michigan show. It was written for the film 8 Mile and appeared on its soundtrack. MusicRadar’s 2026 feature says the track spent 12 weeks at No. 1 on the US Billboard chart, reached No. 1 in the UK and 18 other countries, and won Grammys for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Solo Performance. Those chart and award details are as reported by MusicRadar.
What is confirmed—and what is interpretation?
The Michigan tribute is the reason contemporary reports gave for the song selection. The sources reviewed do not include a direct quotation from Swift explaining why she chose “Lose Yourself” for that particular show, so it is more accurate to describe the tribute as reported context than as a confirmed personal explanation. Entertainment Tonight also suggested the performance was surprising because it contrasted with Swift’s public image at the time; that was the outlet’s interpretation, not a stated motive from Swift.

The Grand Rapids cover should also be kept separate from Swift’s earlier Detroit-area appearances. A 2023 Detroit Free Press feature republished by Yahoo discussed her earlier ties to the area, including a 2006 appearance and interest in 8 Mile; it does not establish her reason for performing the song in Grand Rapids in 2011. That retrospective account concerns a different moment in her career.

The reports describe Swift covering Eminem’s song; they do not say that Eminem appeared or performed with her. The performance was a live cover, not a duet.
