Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce were reportedly invited to the Met Gala on May 5, 2025, but couldn’t attend because of scheduling conflicts, according to reports published the next day. Privacy was also cited as context for the couple’s quieter period, but neither Swift nor Kelce publicly confirmed that as the reason for missing the event.
What was the reported reason they missed the Met Gala?
The most consistently reported explanation was a scheduling conflict. Teen Vogue, citing TMZ, said the couple “could not make it work as a result of their schedules”; Forbes and Marie Claire reported the same explanation. Teen Vogue, Forbes and Marie Claire covered the absence on May 6, 2025.
That explanation comes from media reports, not a public statement by either star. No direct explanation from Swift or Kelce was identified in the coverage, so the scheduling conflict should be understood as reported rather than as a confirmed account from the couple.
Was privacy another reason?
Elle framed the absence in the context of the couple spending more time out of the public eye. It cited an April Us Weekly insider who said they wanted more privacy and observed: “Taylor and Travis have learned that so much attention on their relationship is not the best thing.” That is an unnamed source’s characterization, not a statement from Swift or Kelce. Elle’s report also described them as choosing a quiet evening together.

Swift has previously spoken about public relationships. In a 2023 Time interview quoted by Elle, she said: “When you say a relationship is public, that means I’m going to see him do what he loves, we’re showing up for each other, other people are there and we don’t care.” The comment offers context about her perspective on being seen together; it does not establish why the couple missed the 2025 gala.
Why did people expect them to attend?
The event was a notable potential milestone for the pair. Swift last attended the Met Gala in 2016, when she was a co-chair, while Kelce had never attended; 2025 would have been his debut. Kelce was photographed in New York for a commercial shoot shortly before the gala, prompting speculation that he might appear, but being in the city did not result in an appearance. Elle reported that neither attended the after-parties.
