Why South Park’s “The Death Camp of Tolerance” Still Has One of Animation’s Darkest Endings

South Park’s “The Death Camp of Tolerance” ends with Garrison and Mr. Slave sent to the camp—and Lemmiwinks crowned Gerbil King. Here’s why the tonal collision still unsettles.

South Park’s “The Death Camp of Tolerance” ends with two deliberately jarring payoffs: Mr. Garrison and Mr. Slave are sent to the camp Garrison tried to inflict on his pupils, while Lemmiwinks emerges alive from Mr. Slave and is crowned Gerbil King. That collision of Holocaust-film imagery, grotesque body comedy and a storybook quest makes the ending disturbing—but “darkest in animation history” is an opinion, not an established ranking.

Which South Park episode is it?

It is “The Death Camp of Tolerance,” Season 6, Episode 14, written by Trey Parker and originally aired in the United States on November 20, 2002. The official South Park Studios episode archive provides the episode’s credits, story and original air date. Paramount+ lists it as a 22-minute, TV-MA episode.

The “24 years later” framing points to the anniversary on November 20, 2026. As of October 7, 2026, that date is still ahead. The episode’s power does not depend on the anniversary, though: its ending brings together two very different kinds of grotesquerie.

What happens at the end?

Garrison’s plan backfires

Garrison wants to be fired so he can sue the school for sexual discrimination. He tries to provoke the school with an outrageous classroom “science experiment” involving the class gerbil, Lemmiwinks, and Mr. Slave. When the children reject his behavior, they are labeled intolerant and sent to a fictional camp where food deprivation, hard labor and crafts are presented as lessons in tolerance.

At the camp’s award ceremony, Garrison escalates his behavior in another attempt to get fired, but the audience applauds instead. He finally admits that he wanted to lose his job so he could sue. The parents then recognize that the boys objected to Garrison’s conduct, not to gay people generally, and bring them home. Garrison and Mr. Slave are sent to the camp in their place.

Lemmiwinks survives

The episode also resolves Lemmiwinks’ parallel ordeal: he survives his journey through Mr. Slave’s body, is coughed up alive, and is declared the Gerbil King. Animal spirits help him along the way, turning the body-horror premise into a fantasy quest.

Why the ending feels so disturbing

A camp parody with a grave visual reference

The camp scenes are presented in black and white. The official episode archive describes them as an homage to films depicting concentration-camp brutality, including Schindler’s List. That reference gives the camp scenes a visual language associated with historical atrocity, even as the episode uses it for an absurd, fictional “tolerance” lesson. The discomfort comes partly from that clash; it is not proof that the episode’s treatment of the subject is beyond criticism.

A fantasy quest inside grotesque body comedy

At the same time, Lemmiwinks’ journey is staged like a fantasy adventure. The official archive compares the sequence’s animation style and accompanying music to The Hobbit. The contrast is stark: one thread borrows the look of serious Holocaust cinema, while the other turns a bodily violation into a musical creature quest. The episode switches between registers without letting either one soften the other.

The final beat makes that collision especially sharp. Garrison and Mr. Slave’s punishment closes the camp storyline, while Lemmiwinks’ survival supplies a mock-heroic triumph. The result is grotesque and abrupt rather than simply tragic. Calling it animation’s “darkest” ending remains a personal judgment; the available official material does not establish a ranking against other animated finales.

What the episode says about tolerance

The story distinguishes tolerating a person from approving of every action. In the episode’s closing lesson, a fictional character explains: “Look, just because you have to tolerate something doesn’t mean you have to approve of it! If you had to like it, it’d be called the Museum of Acceptance! ‘Tolerate’ means you’re just putting up with it”. That is dialogue from the episode, not a statement by Parker, Stone or a real-world expert.

Within the plot, the distinction matters because the boys are punished for objecting to Garrison’s behavior, and their parents eventually understand what they were objecting to. The episode’s reversal makes the camp a crude instrument of the story’s satire: it targets the gap between a declared lesson in tolerance and the behavior being excused in its name.

Credits, commentary and where to watch

South Park Studios announced on August 13, 2014 that creator commentary by Matt and Trey was available for every Season 6 episode, including this one. The announcement confirms that commentary was offered; it does not provide a transcript or a specific creator explanation of this ending. See the South Park Studios announcement archive.

Paramount+ lists the episode, but streaming availability can vary by region and change over time. South Park Studios’ episode page says the episode is unavailable there because of current rights and restrictions and directs viewers to Paramount+. The Season 6 DVD is another potential route: Zavvi’s listing describes a three-disc, Region 2 set containing all 17 episodes, including this one. That listing establishes the format and contents, not current stock or compatibility with every player. Check your region and the retailer’s current listing before buying. See Zavvi.
