Store reviews show that some readers dislike the currency rules, segmented chapters, or the value they get from temporary digital access—but those individual accounts do not show how common the complaints are.
How Manga UP!’s currencies work
Manga UP! is SQUARE ENIX’s official digital manga app. Its FAQ describes three access balances: POINTS, Free COINS, and Paid COINS.
| Balance | How it is obtained | What it can unlock | Consumption order |
|---|---|---|---|
| POINTS | Granted twice daily, according to the FAQ | Normal chapters | First for normal chapters |
| Free COINS | Events or special bonuses | Normal and advance chapters | After POINTS for normal chapters; first for advance chapters |
| Paid COINS | Purchased through Google Play or the App Store | Normal and advance chapters | After POINTS and Free COINS for normal chapters; after Free COINS for advance chapters |
The FAQ says Paid COINS do not expire while the app remains in service, and that the items can only be used in Manga UP!. That statement concerns the balance of Paid COINS; it does not establish how long an individual chapter remains accessible after unlocking it.
Why readers say the system is hard to follow
Reviews on the US and UK App Store and Google Play describe confusion about the currencies and payment rules. One US App Store reviewer recalled confusion over “the XP, little c (I assume some sort of ‘coin’) or the ‘up’.” That is a user’s description of historical terminology, not a current official list: the FAQ now documents POINTS and COINS.

In a UK App Store review dated December 6, 2023, Bron.s called the “currency and payment systems” their main issues and said, “make the system even comprehendible, let alone good!” These are individual opinions, not an official assessment or a measure of how many users share them.
Chapter access, subscriptions, and value
The official Google Play listing also promotes daily free chapter access and a Vault Pass subscription. The listing says the pass unlocks “30,000+ chapters” and describes a catalog of “400+ manga”; these are SQUARE ENIX’s storefront claims, not an independent audit. Its catalog and offers may change and can vary by region. The listing reports an update date of September 8, 2026. View the Google Play listing.

Some reviewers object to chapters being split into multiple paid segments or question paying for digital access rather than keeping a print edition. Those are readers’ value judgments; the cited comparisons do not provide controlled price comparisons. The reviewed sources do not establish current, comparable regional prices or chapter-specific costs, so they cannot show that Manga UP! is universally more or less expensive than ebooks, print volumes, or another reading service.
If keeping a copy matters more to you than immediate digital access, print manga is a reasonable alternative to consider. Manga UP!’s listing names Fullmetal Alchemist, but check the specific title, edition, and volume availability before buying; not every app title is established as having a print edition, and print is not necessarily cheaper.

What to do if a coin balance or chapter fails
A complaint about system design is different from a payment or loading error. One UK review reports losing coins after an error, but that account does not establish that such failures are typical or resolve what happened in that case.

- If your coin balance does not update, restart the Manga UP! app, as the official FAQ recommends.
- If restarting does not fix the balance, open Settings > Support in the app to contact support.
- If a page stops loading, check your connection and restart the app. The FAQ says rereading a chapter that could not be viewed the first time does not consume items a second time.
