The song was nominated for an Oscar but did not win.
How “I’m Just Ken” moved from the audience to the stage
The Academy announced on February 28, 2024, that Ryan Gosling and Mark Ronson would perform “I’m Just Ken” from Barbie at the March 10 ceremony. The show took place at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood. The Academy credited Ronson and Andrew Wyatt with the song’s music and lyrics. Read the Academy’s announcement.
At the ceremony, Gosling launched the number from his seat between Billie Eilish and Margot Robbie, then made his way to the stage. The Los Angeles Times reported that he was joined by an ensemble of 65 male dancers playing Kens. The shift from audience to stage made the performance feel less like a conventional presentation and more like a scene expanding outward into the room. The Los Angeles Times’ account of the staging.
Ronson’s role and the performers who joined Gosling
Ronson was part of the performance, not only a songwriter in the credits. The Academy had announced him as a performer, and contemporaneous coverage describes him joining Gosling onstage. The Associated Press also identified Ronson as executive producer of the Barbie soundtrack. The AP’s performance recap.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash and Wolfgang Van Halen appeared with Gosling and Ronson. Several members of the Barbie cast also joined: Kingsley Ben-Adir, Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa and Scott Evans. The dancers and guest performers turned the song into an ensemble number rather than a solo recital.
The staging: cowboy hats, choreography and a sing-along
The number leaned into the song’s theatricality with cowboy hats, karate chops and hip thrusts. The Los Angeles Times noted a visual reference to Marilyn Monroe’s “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend,” echoing the classic musical number’s showbiz staging. Giant Barbie-head imagery reinforced the performance’s connection to the film.
