Maria Menounos says her experience with a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor taught her to keep asking questions when symptoms persisted. In a January 2025 interview with NIH MedlinePlus Magazine, she described her diagnosis, surgery and advocacy work. Her account is personal testimony—not a guide to diagnosing or treating pancreatic cancer.
What Menounos has said about her diagnosis
Menounos’s NIH MedlinePlus interview describes her diagnosis as a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor, which the article calls a rare form of pancreatic cancer. Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors are a distinct diagnostic category; her story should not be taken as representative of every type of pancreatic cancer.
A May 2023 TODAY video description refers to her illness as stage 2 pancreatic cancer. That stage wording belongs to TODAY’s description; the NIH interview uses the more specific term pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor.
Symptoms, persistence and the search for answers
In a November 2023 PanCAN campaign announcement, the organization reported that Menounos had experienced diarrhea and excruciating abdominal pain and continued to seek answers after initial scans did not show an abnormality. These details describe her reported experience; they are not a checklist for identifying a tumor or a rule for interpreting scans.

In the NIH interview, Menounos put her message this way: “Don’t take symptoms lightly, especially if they persist. You have to keep sounding the alarms, you have to keep searching for answers.” This is her encouragement to speak up about ongoing concerns. Decisions about symptoms, tests and care require qualified health professionals.
The surgery she described
MedlinePlus reports that Menounos underwent a 10-hour operation to remove part of her pancreas, her spleen, 17 lymph nodes and a fibroid. The interview describes the procedure as successful. PanCAN’s 2023 announcement also reported successful tumor-removal surgery.

The operation and its outcome are case details, not a treatment recommendation. Her experience alone cannot establish what surgery or other care is appropriate for another person.
How she connects her experience to advocacy
Menounos told MedlinePlus that sharing her cancer experience is part of her advocacy. She also connected that work to Heal Squad, her podcast. PanCAN documented her participation in a specific pancreatic-cancer awareness campaign in November 2023; that announcement does not establish that she currently holds a formal role with the organization.

Her broader message is captured in another line from the NIH interview: “We are more than a diagnosis.” She presents sharing information and supporting others as ways to keep a health challenge from defining a whole person.

In the January 21, 2025 interview, Menounos expressed gratitude for being healthy and said she had received good news from her oncologist. That is her reported status at that time, not a verified update on her health in 2026.

Her official website also describes a health journey that included a type 1 diabetes diagnosis and a cancerous pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor, followed by surgery to remove the tumor. The page is undated, so it is best understood as her own account rather than a dated current-health report.
