Why did Shannon Sharpe step away from ESPN?
A civil complaint filed in Clark County, Nevada, accused Sharpe of sexual assault and battery. The plaintiff, identified in the filing by the pseudonym Jane Doe, sought $50 million. Those were allegations in a civil lawsuit, not findings by a court. Sharpe denied the allegations and said the relationship was consensual.
On April 24, Sharpe announced that he was temporarily stepping aside from his ESPN duties to focus on his family and respond to what he called “false and disruptive allegations.” He said he intended to return at the start of the NFL preseason. ESPN responded: “This is a serious situation, and we agree with Shannon’s decision to step away.” ESPN’s April 24 report included the statements.
What happened in the lawsuit?
The complaint, dated April 20, 2025, was filed in Clark County, Nevada. Contemporaneous coverage of the filing described the plaintiff’s claims; disputed details should be understood as allegations made in the complaint. Sharpe denied them. The available reporting does not establish a court judgment on the merits.

On July 18, the Associated Press reported that plaintiff’s attorney Tony Buzbee announced the parties had resolved the lawsuit. Buzbee said: “All matters have now been addressed satisfactorily, and the matter is closed. The lawsuit will thus be dismissed with prejudice.” The AP report said no settlement details were released. A dismissal with prejudice generally means a claim cannot be brought again, but the cited report does not establish whether a final dismissal was entered on the court docket.
Was Shannon Sharpe fired from ESPN?
There were two distinct developments. On April 24, Sharpe described his departure as a temporary step-away, and ESPN publicly said it agreed with that decision. On July 30, the Associated Press reported, citing an AP source, that ESPN had cut ties with Sharpe following the settlement. The cited AP account reports ESPN’s later decision; it is not a direct ESPN announcement.
