In a February 28, 2026 interview with Channel 5, Shia LaBeouf said responsibility for his conduct was his and identified anger and ego—not alcohol—as the problem he wanted to address. That interview came 11 days after his arrest in New Orleans on simple-battery allegations. The case later ended with a guilty plea to three counts and a sentence that included two years of active probation.

What did Shia LaBeouf say about the arrest?

LaBeouf spoke with Andrew Callaghan for Channel 5 in an interview posted February 28. ABC News, which reproduced his remarks, reported that he called his behavior “bulls—” and said, “I gotta deal with that.” He also described the incident as “on me.” ABC News

Asked about drinking, LaBeouf said, “I don’t think I have a drinking problem.” He said he believed the issue had more to do with “anger and ego” and called it a “small man complex.” He added that he was trying to navigate the problem and would figure it out. These were his own explanations, not a clinical assessment.

ABC also reported that LaBeouf said he had not been sober for about nine months and was reluctant to return to rehab. Those comments describe what he said in the interview; they do not establish a medical diagnosis or independently verify his sobriety history.

What happened in the February 17 incident?

According to the police account reported by ABC, officers responded at about 12:45 a.m. on February 17 to a reported battery at a business in the 1400 block of Royal Street. Two adult men reported being assaulted. Police alleged that staff tried to remove LaBeouf, that he struck one person with closed fists, returned after leaving and struck that person again, then punched another person. The initial arrest involved two simple-battery counts. These details were allegations in the police account, not findings established at the time of the arrest. ABC News

On February 26, a judge ordered substance-abuse treatment and weekly drug testing as conditions of LaBeouf’s release, the Los Angeles Times reported. Los Angeles Times

How did the case change after the interview?

ABC reported that LaBeouf was arrested again on February 28 and faced a third misdemeanor simple-battery count. On June 3, he pleaded guilty to all three counts, according to ABC News and The Guardian. The guilty plea is the later legal outcome; it should be distinguished from the police allegations reported before the plea. ABC News · The Guardian

What sentence did LaBeouf receive?

ABC reported that the court imposed two years of active probation and suspended six-month jail sentences on each count. The Guardian reported additional conditions: alcohol-abuse rehabilitation, sensitivity training and anger-management classes. It said LaBeouf could face six months in jail if he failed to complete probation successfully. An Associated Press report published October 8 confirmed that he had been sentenced to probation after pleading guilty in the New Orleans case. ABC News · The Guardian · Associated Press

The New Orleans district attorney’s office described the agreement as carrying “meaningful legal consequences and enforceable conditions moving forward,” adding that violations would bring real penalties, The Guardian reported. LaBeouf’s attorney, Sarah Chervinsky, characterized the incident as “nothing more than a minor … bar tussle”; that was the defense’s description, not a court finding. The Guardian
