Garth said their connection was “real and honest,” built on mutual respect and admiration. Jennie Garth described respect, not rivalry
Garth, who played Kelly Taylor opposite Doherty’s Brenda Walsh, said the press often pitted the two actors against each other. In her July 2024 tribute, she described their real connection as “real and honest” and said it was “built on mutual respect and admiration.” Her account offered a direct correction to the rivalry framing that had followed them for years. CBS News and ABC News reported her words.

You were a big part of my understanding of love.” Jason Priestley, who played her on-screen brother Brandon Walsh, wrote that he was “Shocked and saddened” by the death of his friend, describing her as “a force of nature” and saying he would miss her. ABC News and CBS News reported the tributes.

James Eckhouse, who played Jim Walsh, called her “ferocious in her work, ferocious in her love, ferocious in her long courageous battle with cancer.” These tributes were reported by ABC News.
Who Shannen Doherty was to the 90210 cast
Doherty played Brenda Walsh on Beverly Hills, 90210, which ran from 1990 to 2000. She left the series in 1994, but remained part of its public story—and of conversations about its cast—for decades. The tributes after her death reflected distinct relationships, from Garth’s account of mutual respect to Green’s description of a sisterly bond. The Los Angeles Times reports the series and career timeline.

Doherty’s death and cancer timeline
Her publicist, Leslie Sloane, confirmed that Doherty died on July 13, 2024, at age 53, after years with cancer. The Los Angeles Times reported that she was surrounded by loved ones and her dog, Bowie. Doherty was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, said it had gone into remission in 2017, and disclosed its return in 2019. In 2023, she said the cancer had spread to her brain and later to her bones. The Los Angeles Times and CBS News reported the chronology.
These were tributes posted after Doherty’s death and reported in July 2024, not new statements. The reporting also included reactions from her Charmed costars Holly Marie Combs and Rose McGowan, but the 90210 castmates’ words centered on their own memories of her as a colleague, friend, and family-like presence.
