Scarlett Johansson said she was tired of interviewers repeatedly asking about her Ghost in the Shell suit—how long it took to put on and what she wore underneath. She asked whether they put the same questions to men. On Howard Stern’s March 27, 2017 show, Stern then asked whether she worried about how revealing costumes looked on screen. Johansson replied, “I’m more concerned with my performance, of course.”
Why Johansson objected to the outfit questions
Johansson made the remarks after completing the Ghost in the Shell press junket. In the show’s recap, she said she had “finally got so tired” of being asked how long it took to put on her suit and what she wore underneath it. She followed that complaint with a pointed question: “I’m sorry, do you happen to ask a man this question?” The Howard Stern Show’s March 27, 2017 recap also says she had faced similar questions about her Black Widow outfit in the Avengers films.

The Ghost in the Shell suit was a recurring subject during the film’s promotion. The Daily Beast described it as a “skin-tight ‘beige rubber unitard’” and reported Johansson’s remarks in the context of the press tour. The film was scheduled to open March 31, four days after her Stern appearance, according to the show’s March 27 rundown.
What Howard Stern asked—and what Johansson answered
The show’s recap says Stern asked whether, after wearing revealing costumes, Johansson worried about how she looked on screen. Her answer redirected attention from appearance to acting: “I’m more concerned with my performance, of course.”

The title’s suggestion that Stern was “justifying” the outfit is an interpretation, not a documented quote or conclusion in the official recap. The recap establishes that he asked about her concern over her on-screen appearance; it does not establish that he explicitly defended the costume. The distinction matters when recounting the exchange.

The available quotations here come from the show’s official recap rather than a full interview transcript. They support describing Johansson’s frustration with repeated costume questions, her comparison with questions asked of men, Stern’s follow-up about on-screen appearance, and her emphasis on performance. They do not establish additional context or wording beyond what the recap reports. The Daily Beast’s contemporaneous March 27 coverage likewise places her comments during the film’s promotional period.
