Scarlett Johansson said she felt others saw her as older than she was, then cast her in a narrow, hyper-sexualized image that left her feeling objectified and pigeonholed. She discussed that experience on the October 10, 2022 episode of Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, describing how it affected the roles she believed were available to her.
What Johansson said about being sexualized
On Armchair Expert, Johansson recalled that people assumed she was older and had been acting for longer than she had. Fox News reported her saying: “I kind of became objectified and pigeonholed in this way where I felt like I wasn’t getting offers for work for things that I wanted to do.”
She also described thinking, “I think people think I’m like, 40 years old.” In her account, that perception fed into a “weird hyper-sexualized thing” and a sense that her career might already have been confined to a particular kind of role. These are reported quotations from the conversation; the episode listing confirms the subject but does not provide a transcript. Fox News’ October 11, 2022 report carries the quoted remarks.
How she said it affected her career
Johansson connected the experience to typecasting: she felt that being viewed through an older, sexualized image narrowed the work people offered her, including roles she wanted to pursue. Her comments describe her own perception of her opportunities, rather than a claim that every young performer experiences the same pattern.

Fox News also reported that Johansson remembered situations that did not feel age-appropriate and said her mother protected her in many ways. The report does not establish further details about those situations, so her account should not be extended beyond what was reported.
Her perspective on younger actors
Johansson contrasted her experience with her impression of performers in their twenties today, including Zendaya and Florence Pugh. As quoted by Celebitchy, she said younger actors seem “allowed to be all these different things” and that people are “much more dynamic.” That is Johansson’s subjective comparison of perceived role range, not a measured assessment of those actors’ careers or of a change across the industry.

She also cautioned that progress is not linear, saying meaningful change can involve “two steps forward and two steps back.” Her point was that people need room to figure things out for progressive change to take hold. Celebitchy’s October 12, 2022 recap reports these additional remarks.
