That was Bee’s assessment, not CBS’s official explanation or proof of a hidden political motive.
What did Samantha Bee mean by “no-brainer”?
Bee, the former host of TBS’s Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, made the remarks on the Breaking Bread with Tom Papa podcast, as reported by Straight Arrow News on July 30, 2025. She described legacy late-night programs as “hemorrhaging money” and said “people are just not tuning in.” In that context, she said, “It makes the decision such a no-brainer.”
Those phrases express Bee’s view of the business environment; they are not audited financial findings or an independently measured audience statistic. Her point was that a network facing financial pressure could see ending the show as an understandable business choice. She also said the approaching Paramount-Skydance merger made the decision easier, allowing business pressures and merger timing to be relevant at the same time.
What reason did CBS give for ending the show?
CBS announced in July 2025 that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert would end in May 2026 and that the network would retire The Late Show franchise. In its statement, reproduced by CBS News on July 18, 2025, the network called the move “purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night.” CBS also said it was “not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.”

CBS News reported that the network described the program as No. 1 in late night for nine straight seasons. That ranking is CBS’s characterization as quoted in the report, not an independently verified ratings analysis here. The network’s financial explanation likewise remains its stated rationale; the sources cited do not provide audited disclosures establishing the show’s losses.

Was the cancellation politically motivated?
The sources cited here do not establish a hidden political motive. CBS explicitly denied that content or other Paramount matters drove the decision. Bee’s remarks accepted the financial case as credible while noting that merger timing could help explain why cancellation was easier. An opinion column in The Advocate argued that political considerations and the merger mattered, but that is commentary rather than evidence establishing motive.

The careful distinction is between what CBS said, Bee’s interpretation of the business logic, and a columnist’s argument about politics. The available reporting supports describing the motive as disputed; it does not support presenting political interference as fact.
