Robert De Niro thanked Francis Ford Coppola for not casting him in The Godfather because the missed role left him free to play young Vito Corleone in The Godfather Part II—the performance that became his first Academy Award-winning role. De Niro made the joke at the AFI Life Achievement Award tribute honoring Coppola on April 26, 2025.
What De Niro said to Coppola
Addressing Coppola at the April 26, 2025 tribute gala, De Niro said, “Francis, thank you for not casting me in The Godfather.” He followed with the punchline: “It was the best job I ever, never got. And it meant I was available for The Godfather Part II.” The Independent reported his remarks; the Associated Press likewise described him as teasingly lamenting that he was cast in the sequel rather than the original. De Niro then turned the joke into a sincere tribute: “Francis, you changed my career, you changed my life. We’re all here tonight because of you. We love you.” His thanks were about the unexpected path from a missed part to a defining opportunity—not a claim that he knew what his career would have been otherwise.
The role he auditioned for—and the one he got
Sonny Corleone in the original
De Niro auditioned for Sonny Corleone, the role James Caan played in the 1972 The Godfather. In a retrospective interview, De Niro said he was not upset when Caan got the part: “No, not at all. Everybody in New York wanted those parts.” Cigar Aficionado interview

That account establishes the audition and outcome, but it does not establish one definitive reason De Niro was not cast as Sonny or identify a single person responsible for the decision. The joke’s “for good reason” is best understood in hindsight: not being cast made him available for the sequel.
Young Vito Corleone in the sequel
For The Godfather Part II (1974), Coppola asked De Niro to read for the younger version of Vito Corleone. De Niro recalled that after the reading he heard a week or two later that the role was his: “Marty, I think, showed him that, and Francis wanted me to come out and read for him in San Francisco. Then I got a call a week or two after, don’t bother, the part’s yours. That was it.” Cigar Aficionado interview

De Niro’s performance as young Vito was his first Academy Award-winning role. Preparing to play a younger version of a character made famous by Marlon Brando, he studied Brando’s scenes: “Whenever the scenes of Brando were there, we videotaped them, and I took those and I studied those over and over quite a lot.” BFI

The two parts were distinct: Sonny was Vito Corleone’s volatile son in the original film; young Vito was the central figure in the sequel’s earlier-life storyline. De Niro’s tribute connected them in a compact career anecdote: he missed one coveted role, later received another through Coppola, and came to regard the second opportunity as life-changing. It is a story about a fortunate turn, not proof that playing Sonny would have harmed or helped his career.
