Rhaenys turns back because, in actor Eve Best’s interpretation, she decides that continuing to fight for Rhaenyra is a moral duty—even after she has a chance to pull away. The moment comes during the battle at Rook’s Rest in Season 2, Episode 4, “The Red Dragon and the Gold.” The episode’s military setup adds context: Cole’s campaign is described as a lure intended to draw Rhaenyra out from Dragonstone. That strategy helps explain the stakes, but it does not establish Rhaenys’s private motive; Best’s comments do.
What happens when Rhaenys turns back?
In “The Red Dragon and the Gold,” Rhaenys has an opportunity to retreat from the fighting at Rook’s Rest. She instead turns back into the battle. Her reversal is not explained in a line of dialogue that spells out her reasoning, so it helps to distinguish what the episode shows from how Best later interpreted the choice.
Why does Rhaenys return?
Best, who plays Rhaenys, describes the turn as a choice to do what must be done at a moral level. She said: “Even if there was an initial instinct to just move away from the red hot zone, that very quickly turns to plunging back in because that’s what has to be done at a moral level.” Best’s TV Insider interview frames this as her interpretation of Rhaenys, not as dialogue from the episode. In that reading, Rhaenys’s instinct to escape gives way to her sense of obligation to keep fighting for Rhaenyra.
How does Cole’s trap shape the choice?
The battle is also part of a military plan. Sky’s episode explanation describes Cole’s campaign at Rook’s Rest as a deliberate attempt to draw Rhaenyra out from Dragonstone, across the bay. Rhaenys’s return keeps the Black side engaged in a confrontation designed to put pressure on Rhaenyra.

That context raises the stakes, but it is not proof of what Rhaenys is thinking. The most direct account of her motive in the available commentary is Best’s moral-duty reading; the trap explains the broader military situation around her decision.
Where does the scene fit in the episode?
The battle takes place in Season 2, Episode 4, “The Red Dragon and the Gold.” The Warner Bros. Discovery official synopsis sets up the episode with Rhaenyra and Daemon absent and Rhaenys trying to steady the Black Council as Cole begins a campaign into the Crownlands. The episode was written for television by Ryan Condal and directed by Alan Taylor. The synopsis establishes that broader setup; it does not give Rhaenys’s reason for turning back.
