Why Rebel Ridge’s Director Cut Some of Its “Coolest” Choreography

Jeremy Saulnier reportedly cut choreography he admired because it did not feel physically true for Aaron Pierre and the opponent Terry Richmond was facing. The choice favored believable movement over action that looked impressive in isolation—not a claim that the film recreates combat perfectly, but an explanation of the director’s creative standard.

Why did Saulnier cut choreography he thought was cool?

In a quotation reproduced by FandomWire and attributed to Saulnier in a Polygon interview, the director said a sequence looked impressive in the edit but “didn’t feel real.” He said the choreography had to feel true to Pierre’s physicality and to the person he was fighting. If it failed that test, it had to go.

That distinction matters: the report describes cutting choreography, not necessarily removing one complete action scene. Saulnier’s quoted wording refers to “some of the coolest choreography,” so it would overstate the evidence to call it the film’s single coolest scene.

FandomWire’s September 14, 2024, report is the available source for the quotation and attributes it to Polygon. The original Polygon interview was not available to verify the wording directly, so the attribution here follows that reporting chain: FandomWire’s report.

What kind of action was Saulnier aiming for?

Saulnier described the combat as grounded in grappling, brute force, leverage and position rather than elaborate techniques. In the same account, he said wire work was largely absent, aside from a couple of assists to take weight off performers. He summarized his preference as “awkward reality.”

The creative trade-off is between visual polish and perceived physical truth. A technically elaborate move can be exciting, but if it does not suit the bodies performing it or the situation in the scene, it may pull viewers out of the action. That is an interpretation of Saulnier’s stated rationale, not a measured claim about how audiences respond.

How does the decision fit Terry Richmond?

Saulnier has described Terry as thoughtful and respectful, trying to navigate a small-town court system and its bureaucracy before circumstances push him into a corner. In that context, action that makes Terry seem effortlessly showy could work against the character the film establishes. The more restrained physical approach keeps the emphasis on what Terry must do, rather than on displaying technique for its own sake.

Aaron Pierre made a related choice in performance. In an interview published by Stars and Stripes in its September 13, 2024, issue, he said Terry’s capability made it tempting to do too much, and that he tried to normalize how cool the character was. Pierre’s comment supports the idea of restraint in portraying Terry; it does not independently explain why Saulnier removed a particular piece of choreography. What the editing choice does—and does not—tell us

Saulnier’s account describes a filmmaker judging action by whether it feels credible for the performers and the characters, even when a more polished beat is appealing on its own terms. It does not establish that every movement in Rebel Ridge is realistic, or that every viewer will find its action convincing. It does explain why, for this film, an impressive move could be the wrong move.

Saulnier also told TheWrap that he combed through every frame in postproduction. That offers broader context for his close involvement in editing, but it is not separate confirmation of the specific choreography anecdote. Read TheWrap’s interview coverage.
