Prince Harry’s two-day Toronto visit for veterans’ events drew palace-drama coverage because his office said royal communications staff had been told about the trip in advance, while palace-side sources reportedly disputed receiving advance notice. The trip’s announcement also coincided with Prince William’s Brazil engagements. Neither the notice dispute nor the timing proves that Harry intended to provoke the palace or overshadow his brother.
What was Prince Harry doing in Toronto?
Harry visited Toronto on November 5–6, 2025, for events supporting veterans and the military community ahead of Remembrance Day. The reported engagements included events connected with the True Patriot Love Foundation and a visit to Sunnybrook Veterans Centre. This was a separate trip from his February 2025 appearance at the Invictus Games in British Columbia. CityNews Toronto, reporting from The Canadian Press, described the Toronto events.
Was Buckingham Palace told about the trip?
The accounts conflict. Harry’s office said royal communications staff had been informed in advance as a courtesy. Reporting based on palace-side sources said staff at Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace had not received advance warning. The available reporting does not independently resolve which account is correct, so it is more accurate to describe the notification as disputed than to say the palace was definitely informed—or definitely kept in the dark. Us Weekly’s November 17, 2025 report covered the disagreement.
Why did the timing draw attention?
The announcement of Harry’s Toronto visit coincided with William beginning a trip to Brazil that included Earthshot Prize events and COP30-related duties. The overlap gave coverage a potential sibling-rivalry angle, but it establishes timing, not motive. Claims that Harry planned the announcement to overshadow William or deliberately provoke the palace are interpretations, not established facts. The Associated Press report on William’s Brazil engagements was published November 2, 2025.

What was “Hat Gate”?
During a Toronto dinner for the True Patriot Love Foundation, Harry addressed his choice to wear a Los Angeles Dodgers cap at a World Series game involving the Toronto Blue Jays. The Associated Press reported that he apologized and explained he wore it as a polite gesture after an invitation from the Dodgers’ owner. Harry said: “I am truly sorry for wearing a Dodgers cap.” He also joked about the incident as “Hat Gate.” The cap story added a lighter, Canada-specific anecdote to coverage of the trip; it was not the source of the dispute over palace notification. The Associated Press report was published November 7, 2025.

The palace angle rests on two reported circumstances: a disagreement over whether palace communications staff had advance notice, and the overlap with William’s Brazil schedule. Those circumstances explain why the Toronto visit became a story about royal relations. They do not establish that Harry intended a confrontation, that the palace formally objected to the visit, or that the two brothers were competing through their schedules.
