Why My Hero Academia’s Ending Felt Lacking: Chapters 430 and 431 Explained

Chapter 430 offers a hopeful but compressed glimpse of Izuku’s future. Chapter 431 adds more adult-life material, though its adequacy depends on the closure each reader wanted.

Spoilers for the manga’s ending, including chapters 430 and 431. The ending can feel lacking because chapter 430 compresses years of aftermath into a short glimpse: Izuku Midoriya has lost One For All, become a U.A. teacher, and misses active hero work before a suit from his classmates offers him a way back. That is a hopeful resolution, but it leaves little room to show how his new life unfolds. The collected finale later added chapter 431, “More,” extending the glimpse of Class 1-A’s adult lives without guaranteeing that every reader’s wish for closure is met.

What actually counts as the ending?

There are two relevant stopping points. Chapter 430 ended the manga’s Weekly Shonen Jump serialization in August 2024. Chapter 431, titled “More,” was added afterward to final volume 42. The official anime-site announcement describes “More” as showing Class 1-A further into adult life. So a judgment based only on chapter 430 misses published material, while readers can still reasonably find the added chapter insufficient for the closure they wanted.

The distinction matters because chapter 430’s ending is deliberately compact. Chapter 431 expands the future-facing material, but its existence alone cannot settle a subjective question like whether the ending feels complete.

Why chapter 430 can feel abrupt

The time jump skips the adjustment

Chapter 430 jumps eight years after graduation. Izuku is now a teacher at U.A.; One For All’s embers have faded, leaving him without a quirk, and he misses being an active hero. The chapter gives readers a future snapshot rather than a sustained account of the years that brought him there. Anyone wanting to see more of Izuku’s transition from student hero to teacher, or how his former classmates built their adult lives, has to infer much of that change.

His return to hero work arrives at the finish

Izuku’s classmates help develop a suit that lets him rejoin them in hero work. It is an affirming answer to his loss of power and a culmination of the story’s emphasis on support. But the reveal comes at the end of chapter 430, so the original finale offers little space to show how this next phase affects him or what it looks like in practice.

The reunion is an image, not a long aftermath

The adult Class 1-A hero image conveys continued connection, but it does not provide extended scenes of each character’s career, relationships, or day-to-day life. Readers who wanted those details may experience the ending as a promise of togetherness rather than full closure. That is a response to the structure on the page, not evidence of a universal or majority reaction.

What chapter 431 adds—and what it cannot guarantee

“More” carries the ending further into the characters’ adult lives. Its inclusion in volume 42 makes the collected ending broader than the serialization finale, and the official franchise announcement identifies it as an added chapter. Readers comparing the two versions can ask whether the additional future material supplies the character-focused closure they missed in chapter 430.

Whether it “fixes” the ending depends on the concern. More adult-life material may help someone who wanted another look at Class 1-A, but no announcement can establish that every reader will find it satisfying. Chapter 431 is an extension, not proof that the original ending was either defective or fully resolved.

The case for the ending’s hopeful reading

Chapter 430 does not treat Izuku’s teaching as a consolation prize or suggest that heroism only means fighting with a quirk. He has a meaningful role at U.A., and his classmates’ work gives him the opportunity to return to active hero work alongside them. The ending’s central gesture is collective: his future is shaped not only by individual power, but also by the people who support him.

That choice has context in creator Kohei Horikoshi’s own comments. In a chapter 424 author comment, reported by ComicBook.com on June 2, 2024, Horikoshi said the story could not end immediately after the fighting stopped and would continue for a while before returning to its title. The remark explains why the narrative had an aftermath at all; it does not establish that every reader would find its length or detail sufficient.

How to judge the ending for yourself

  • If you wanted Izuku’s emotional resolution: focus on his life as a teacher, his admission that he misses hero work, and the support that makes a return possible.
  • If you wanted a fuller view of the class as adults: distinguish chapter 430’s closing snapshot from chapter 431’s added future material.
  • If you wanted to see the new hero phase develop: note that chapter 430 ends as that possibility opens; it does not follow Izuku through an extended return to the field.
  • If you are comparing the serialization finale with the collected ending: read chapter 431 as an addition to the chapter 430 conclusion, not as a replacement for it.

The most defensible explanation for the “lacking” feeling is therefore specific: chapter 430 moves quickly from loss to renewed possibility after a large time jump. For some readers, its hopeful ending and the added chapter provide enough; for others, the brief glimpse leaves the adult relationships and consequences they wanted largely off the page.
