Amazon expanded ads in Prime Video shows and movies to more markets in 2025, including India and the Netherlands. In the U.S., ad breaks were also reported to have grown: ADWEEK said in June 2025 that Prime Video’s ad load had reached four to six minutes per hour, based on interviews with six ad buyers, documents it reviewed, and an email from an Amazon representative. Amazon has not published that range as a universal specification, so the amount can vary by title and viewing session.
What changed in 2025?
Amazon first announced that ads would appear in Prime Video shows and movies in September 2023, with rollout beginning in early 2024. The initial markets were the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, and Canada; Amazon said France, Italy, Spain, Mexico, and Australia would follow later in 2024. In 2025, the company announced further expansion to India and the Netherlands.
Amazon’s stated reason for introducing ads was to keep investing in content. It said it aimed to show “meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers.” That was the company’s stated goal, not a published guarantee about the number or length of breaks in every program. India
Amazon announced that ads would be added to Prime Video shows and movies in India during 2025, without changing the then-current Prime membership price. Netherlands
Amazon said Prime Video shows and movies in the Netherlands would include limited ads starting in 2025, and that an ad-free option was planned. The announcement does not establish a current price or provide a complete availability and eligibility guide. Amazon Europe’s announcement
How many ads are there per hour?
ADWEEK reported in June 2025 that Prime Video’s ad load had gradually increased to four to six minutes per hour. The publication said the range was based on six ad buyers, documents it reviewed, and an email from an Amazon representative. It is trade-press reporting, not a consumer-facing Amazon specification; it should not be read as a fixed amount for every program, country, or session. ADWEEK’s report

In response, an Amazon Ads spokesperson told ADWEEK: “Our commitment is to improving ad experiences rather than simply increasing the number of ads shown.” Amazon’s public announcements describe ads as limited but do not give the same four-to-six-minute figure as a universal standard.
Can you watch Prime Video without ads?
Amazon offers an ad-free option in some markets, but availability, eligibility, coverage, and price depend on the country and subscription. Check the Prime Video account page for your location for current terms. The original U.S. announcement listed an additional $2.99 per month for the ad-free option; that was the announced launch price, not a verified current price or a worldwide rate. Amazon’s India announcement confirms that sign-up opened in June 2025 but does not state a price in the reviewed text.

Amazon says live-event sports continue to include ads. An ad-free option for shows and movies should therefore not be taken to mean that every type of Prime Video viewing is commercial-free. Check the terms for the specific market and content you watch. Amazon’s U.S. announcement

Amazon said the change would help it continue investing in content. The company has also presented Prime Video as an advertising platform, emphasizing audience reach and interactive formats. In May 2025, Amazon Ads said Prime Video reached over 130 million average monthly ad-supported customers in the U.S. That is Amazon’s own reported figure, not an independent audience measurement. The formats Amazon has described include pause ads and shoppable placements. Amazon Ads said newer shoppable formats could show details such as product information, prices, deals, reviews, availability, and Prime shipping information, with interactive options for customers. These are advertising features, not changes viewers need to enable to watch a program.

What viewers should check before paying for ad-free viewing
- Country and eligibility: Confirm the ad-free option is offered for your account and subscription in your market.
- Current price: Use the local Prime Video account page rather than relying on an older announcement price.
- Content coverage: Check whether the option covers the shows and movies you watch; live-event sports may still have ads.
- Subscription tier: Check how the option applies to your membership, including any separate Prime Video or Lite tier.
