Among Clint Eastwood’s American Westerns, Unforgiven is the strongest choice for No. 1: it turns the gunfighter legend into its subject, not simply its spectacle. This ranking focuses on the later cycle Eastwood starred in and often directed—not every Western in his career, including Sergio Leone’s Dollars trilogy. The order is an editorial argument, not a consensus list; the critical case is strongest for the first four films, while the final two are earlier-cycle choices.

How this ranking weighs the films

The films are ranked by how powerfully they revise the Western’s heroic myths, use or challenge Eastwood’s laconic gunfighter persona, and extend their themes beyond frontier action. Critical and institutional assessments inform the order, but they do not settle it: evidence is not equally extensive for all six titles.

1. Unforgiven (1992)

Eastwood’s late-career Western makes the violence behind the gunslinger legend impossible to ignore. He plays an aging former outlaw drawn back into killing, and the film examines how violence is remembered, embellished and sold as heroism. That self-questioning gives Eastwood’s familiar screen persona a reckoning rather than another uncomplicated victory.

The British Film Institute calls it Eastwood’s “definitive statement on the western as an American art form,” while AFI Silver identifies it as a landmark revisionist Western. The film received nine Academy Award nominations and won four: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Editing and Best Supporting Actor, according to AFI Silver. Those honors strengthen the case for its place at the top; the film’s sustained interrogation of myth is the more important reason.

2. The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976)

What begins as a revenge story grows into a rough, unlikely account of people forming a community. Josey is a Missouri farmer pursued after soldiers kill his family, but the film’s reach comes from what happens as he gathers other outsiders around him. Its lone gunman gradually becomes responsible for more than his own survival.

The BFI calls it “the best of the crop” among New Hollywood Westerns and “the defining western of the decade.” Its reading also connects the film’s allegory of violence to the Vietnam era. It is the broadest epic on this list and the strongest alternative to Unforgiven for the top position.

3. High Plains Drifter (1973)

Eastwood’s second feature as director sends a mysterious stranger into a town whose residents want protection but have little claim to moral innocence. Rather than confirm the town’s authority, the film makes its response to violence part of the indictment. The stranger’s near-supernatural presence turns familiar Western imagery into something punitive and disturbing.

The BFI describes the film as an “apocalyptic subversion of western iconography.” Its darkness was divisive: in the BFI’s account, John Wayne objected, “That wasn’t what the west was all about.” The remark is useful less as a verdict than as evidence of how pointedly Eastwood’s film unsettled one established idea of the genre.

4. Pale Rider (1985)

A mysterious preacher rides into a mining community threatened by a powerful landowner, bringing supernatural suggestion back into Eastwood’s Westerns. The BFI links those supernatural elements to High Plains Drifter and describes the film as an ecological riff on Shane. Where High Plains Drifter feels like an attack on a town’s moral pretensions, Pale Rider is leaner and more mythic, shaped by a community’s struggle to protect its land.

5. Hang ’Em High (1968)

Eastwood’s first American Western after his breakthrough in Leone’s films is a useful starting point for the screen persona he would keep complicating. He plays a man left for dead after a lynching who becomes a lawman; the AFI career profile describes him as a “good guy” only because his enemies are much worse. That qualification captures the film’s appeal: its lawman is not separated from the violence around him by a neat line between good and evil.

6. Two Mules for Sister Sara (1970)

This lighter, more comic adventure offers a tonal counterpoint to the vengeful gunmen and ominous strangers elsewhere on the list. Eastwood’s mercenary Hogan finds himself helping Sara, a nun with her own agenda, during the French intervention in Mexico. Their uneasy partnership makes the film a reminder that Eastwood’s Western work was not confined to grim revisionism.

The sources informing this ranking provide less critical assessment of this title than of the films above. Its inclusion is therefore a considered choice for range, not a claim that a comparative body of criticism establishes it as the sixth-best film or an uncontested masterpiece.

Why Bronco Billy is a credible alternative

For readers who value self-reflexive comedy over frontier drama, Bronco Billy (1980) could take a place on the list. The BFI calls it perhaps Eastwood’s most underrated film and argues that it subverts both Western mythology and Eastwood’s own image. That makes it a compelling alternative, though it occupies a different tonal register from the six ranked here.

Where the list fits in Eastwood’s Western career

Eastwood’s international breakthrough came in Sergio Leone’s A Fistful of Dollars (1964), For a Few Dollars More (1965) and The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (1966), as AFI’s career profile records. Those films are excluded here because this list is limited to the later American cycle. For that cycle, the BFI’s retrospective emphasis falls particularly on The Outlaw Josey Wales, Pale Rider and Unforgiven. Including the Leone trilogy would change the scope—and likely the debate—not simply add three more entries.
