The contrast between the two Elio trailers is real—but it is a shift in promotional emphasis, not evidence that Pixar remade the film. The November 2024 teaser leads with a boy who wants to be abducted and is mistaken for Earth’s representative; Disney’s May 2025 trailer announcement instead spotlights alien relationships and Elio’s hope of moving to space. The film opened in theaters on June 20, 2025.
What the earlier teaser emphasizes
Pixar’s November 21, 2024 teaser introduces Elio through his desire to be abducted by aliens. Its central turn is that he reaches the Communiverse and is mistaken for Earth’s leader. That setup puts the joke and predicament of mistaken identity at the center of the pitch.
What changed in the later trailer’s pitch
Disney’s May 27, 2025 announcement of a new trailer describes Elio aligning with aliens in hopes of relocating to space permanently. Compared with the teaser, this framing gives more weight to the alien ensemble and to Elio’s wish to leave Earth.
| Promotional framing | Main emphasis | What it suggests |
|---|---|---|
| Pixar teaser, November 2024 | Elio wants to be abducted; aliens mistake him for Earth’s leader. | A mistaken-identity premise built around his wish to be taken away. |
| Disney UK trailer announcement, May 2025 | Elio aligns with aliens and hopes to relocate to space. | A greater emphasis on alien relationships and the possibility of belonging elsewhere. |
That change can make the later trailer feel like it is selling a different kind of film: the teaser foregrounds an unusual first-contact mix-up, while the later description points toward an intergalactic community and a more lasting escape from Earth.

Does the trailer difference mean the story was rewritten?
No such conclusion is established by the official materials. The teaser and the later press description show different parts of the public-facing pitch; neither documents production changes or proves that the finished story was wholly rewritten. A trailer synopsis also cannot, by itself, tell you how much of the completed film it reveals.
How the finished film was described
Disney’s official movie listing gives the theatrical release date as June 20, 2025 and names Madeline Sharafian, Domee Shi, and Adrian Molina as directors. The film is therefore a released title, not an upcoming release.

In a review published June 17, 2025, the Associated Press described Elio as a lonely 11-year-old whose interest in aliens offers comfort and hope. The reviewer also found that the story stretched in several directions, describing the result as disjointed and strained. That is the AP reviewer’s assessment, not a claim of critical consensus. What viewers can take from the contrast
- The teaser’s hook is Elio’s wish to be abducted and the aliens’ mistaken belief that he represents Earth.
- The later official description shifts attention toward Elio’s connections with aliens and his hope of settling in space.
- The available official descriptions establish a difference in emphasis, not the production history behind it.
- The released film can be judged separately from either trailer’s pitch; the AP review reads it as a story about loneliness while criticizing its narrative sprawl.
