Pauley Perrette left NCIS after 15 seasons because she had decided to leave well before her final episodes and wanted Abby Sciuto’s farewell to feel thoughtful, not abrupt. Perrette described it as a considered choice, and CBS said it respected her decision. Later reporting about tension involving Mark Harmon’s dog raised questions, but it does not establish that the incident caused her departure.
Why did Pauley Perrette leave NCIS?
Perrette’s public explanation was that she chose to leave after considerable thought. When she announced her departure in October 2017, she wrote, “It was a decision made last year.” CBS said it respected her decision and that the season would include a special send-off. CBS News reported the announcement and the network’s response.
In a May 2018 interview, after Abby’s final episode had aired, Perrette said, “It was not on a whim, it was after a lot of thought.” She also explained that she wanted Abby’s exit to avoid feeling “harmful, shocking, out of the blue.” Her comments describe the reason she gave publicly; they do not disclose every private consideration behind her decision. What did Perrette want for Abby’s farewell?
Perrette said Abby mattered deeply to her and to the show’s fans, so she wanted the character to have a deliberate goodbye rather than simply disappear. A CBS Sunday Morning segment listing described Perrette as having a hard time letting go after 15 years. That emotional attachment is consistent with her explanation for wanting a thoughtful exit; it is not evidence of a separate, undisclosed reason for leaving.

Did Pauley Perrette leave because of Mark Harmon’s dog?
That claim goes beyond what the public record establishes. In May 2018, TheWrap reported that Harmon’s dog bit a crew member in October 2016 and that the crew member needed 15 stitches. Citing people familiar with the production, the outlet said Perrette objected when the dog returned to the set and that the actors were reportedly scheduled not to work the same days.
The account was contested: TheWrap said Harmon’s attorney stated the dog did not return, while unnamed sources told the outlet otherwise; CBS declined to comment. TheWrap also quoted an insider who said Perrette had decided to leave before the dog incident. Perrette declined to comment for that report. The article documents a reported workplace conflict, but it does not prove that the dispute caused her departure—or that Harmon physically assaulted Perrette. What about rumors that she left to start a skincare line?
Perrette rejected that explanation. In her TV Insider interview, she called the skincare-line story a scam and also denied that she was leaving because CBS was angry with her. Those rumors should not be treated as facts about her exit.

Abby’s fictional exit and Perrette’s real-life decision are related, but the character’s story is not itself proof of the actress’s private motives.
