Pam Grier said she chose to do nude scenes in Coffy (1973) and Foxy Brown (1974) to help audiences accept women of color as powerful screen figures. She wanted viewers to see them as sexually visible and beautiful, but also as women who could lead action films, fight, and wield guns. The available account supports her explanation for doing the scenes; it does not establish that she contractually insisted they be included.
Why did Pam Grier choose to do nude scenes?
In an excerpt published by Metrograph, Grier explained that she wanted audiences to become accustomed to seeing women of color on screen. She said the nudity in Coffy and Foxy Brown was meant “to help create the audience” and make people accept seeing women of color “in power, with martial arts and guns.”
She also described challenging narrow ideas about who could be presented as sexually attractive. In the same account, Grier recalled being told that “our brown nipples weren’t attractive” and said she was trying to break the boundaries of what society considered acceptable. Metrograph reproduces these remarks in its 2022 article drawing on interviews and her memoir, without identifying the original interview date for the passage. Read Grier’s account at Metrograph.
What did nudity have to do with power and representation?
Grier’s explanation connects sexual visibility with the roles she wanted audiences to accept. Her characters were not simply objects of attraction: they were protagonists who fought back and drove the action. The Guardian’s 2022 interview places Coffy, her first lead role in the genre, in the early-1970s career arc that made her a leading Blaxploitation star.

Looking back on the films, Grier acknowledged their campy qualities and weaknesses while emphasizing what audiences could still see: “women of colour stand up and speak up.” Her point was that those roles offered a kind of screen agency rarely afforded to women of color in the films she was discussing. Read Ryan Gilbey’s interview with Grier in The Guardian.
Did Grier insist that the filmmakers include the scenes?
That stronger claim is not established by the cited accounts. Grier said she chose to do nudity in the two films and explained why she did so. That supports describing her motivation, but it does not show that she made nudity a contractual condition or demanded that filmmakers add scenes.
