She told TV Insider that she accepted after earlier offers had not felt right—and that acting opposite her husband, Mark Harmon, was a new experience for them on television.
When did Pam Dawber first appear on NCIS?
Dawber’s debut as Marcie Warren aired April 6, 2021, in the Season 18 episode “The First Day.” TV Insider’s interview with Dawber was published that same day. The interview said she had joined for the first of four planned episodes.
That debut is separate from her later appearance in the Season 19 premiere, “Blood in the Water,” which CBS lists as airing September 20, 2021. CBS’s episode page describes Marcie there as the journalist who wrote an exposé on Gibbs and was tracking a serial killer with him.
Why did Dawber accept the role?
Dawber said she had been asked to join NCIS before, but the earlier offers did not have the right character or timing. “It just wasn’t the right character or the right time,” she told TV Insider. Marcie, an experienced investigative reporter, gave her a role she wanted to play.

She also said she had not acted for a while and felt nervous about returning. Her deciding thought was, “I finally thought I’d feel worse if I chickened out.” Once on set, she said, she felt safe and enjoyed working with Rocky Carroll, who directed her. Those were Dawber’s reflections in 2021, not a current statement about her career plans.
Who is Marcie Warren, and how does she enter Gibbs’s story?
Marcie is a persistent investigative journalist who begins looking into why Gibbs was suspended after the dogfighting incident. In the Season 18 finale, CBS’s official episode guide sets out the context for Gibbs and Marcie’s developing connection; the Season 19 premiere later identifies her as the reporter behind an exposé on him.

Dawber described Marcie as strong and unafraid of Gibbs. Their dynamic is built on contrast rather than romance: Marcie talks readily, while Gibbs’s terse one-liners frustrate her. Dawber said that opposition created humor and felt natural to play. “She’s a strong woman,” she told TV Insider.
Had Dawber and Harmon worked together before?
Although Dawber and Harmon were married, the 2021 NCIS episodes were their first time working together on television, Dawber said. They had previously appeared together in the 2000 feature film I’ll Remember April and in a 1990s theater production of Love Letters.

What did Dawber say about acting opposite her husband?
Dawber described the experience as comfortable rather than intimidating. She said she felt safe on the set and appreciated the natural comic friction between Marcie’s talkative approach and Gibbs’s clipped responses. “I felt so safe on that set,” she told TV Insider. The interview does not present Marcie and Gibbs as romantic partners; their connection is framed through her reporting and their contrasting personalities.
