In her Associated Press review, Jocelyn Noveck argues that the film’s slick, breezy style and fictionalized characters weaken its emotional force—and leave it with little new to say about the opioid crisis.
What is Pain Hustlers about?
Directed by David Yates, the film stars Emily Blunt as Liza Drake, a struggling single mother who takes a pharmaceutical sales job and becomes caught in a racketeering scheme. Chris Evans plays fellow sales representative Pete Brenner; Andy Garcia and Catherine O’Hara are also in the cast. Netflix says the film debuted on its service on October 27, 2023. Its listing remains on Netflix, but whether it is available to stream depends on territory and can change.

Is Pain Hustlers based on a true story?
Yes, in the sense that it draws on a real pharmaceutical-company scandal; no, if “true story” means a close retelling of specific people and events. The real company was Insys Therapeutics, which marketed Subsys, a fentanyl-based spray intended for breakthrough cancer pain. The film relocates the story to fictional company Zanna and reshapes its people, including Liza Drake, as fictional or composite characters. It also uses a Florida setting, while Insys operated nationally.
TIME connects the film to Evan Hughes’s reporting and book about Insys. The book, The Hard Sell: Crime and Punishment at an Opioid Startup, offers a route into the case beyond the movie, though readers should check current editions and availability.

The legal record is distinct from the film’s invented characters. The U.S. Department of Justice says Insys founder John Kapoor was convicted by a federal jury of racketeering conspiracy in May 2019 and sentenced to 66 months in prison on January 23, 2020. Prosecutors said the scheme included bribes and kickbacks to practitioners to induce Subsys prescriptions, sometimes when they were medically unnecessary. In the DOJ’s sentencing release, U.S. Attorney Andrew E. Lelling characterized the conduct this way: “Out of pure greed, Insys executives, from John Kapoor on down, bribed doctors to prescribe this powerful and highly addictive narcotic to people who did not need it.”

Why does the film fail to impress?
Noveck’s AP review takes issue with the gap between the gravity of the subject and the movie’s presentation. She describes a film that tries too hard to be slick and breezy, pointing to mockumentary-style interviews and wild montages that, in her view, undercut rather than deepen the story. Blunt’s screen presence earns praise, but Noveck argues that it cannot overcome the movie’s broader choices.
One such choice is its sympathetic framing of Liza. Because she is a composite character working at an invented company, the film is free to shape her arc, but Noveck sees that framing and the handling of the source material as limiting the story’s impact. The result, in her assessment, is a drama that revisits ground covered by recent opioid-crisis screen stories without adding much.

That is a critical judgment, not a measure of universal audience reaction. The available evidence here supports an attributed review argument, not a numerical claim about viewers or box-office performance.

The film’s fictionalization can make a complicated corporate scandal easier to follow as a character drama, but it also asks viewers to keep two accounts separate: the invented Zanna story and the documented Insys case. The more the movie leans on a single protagonist’s personal transformation and on breezy, high-energy devices, the less room it leaves—according to Noveck’s critique—for the patients harmed by the underlying conduct to carry emotional weight.

That tension is useful when judging Pain Hustlers alongside other screen accounts of the opioid crisis. Consider four questions:
- Fidelity: How closely does the work track the documented case rather than rearranging it for drama?
- Clarity: Can viewers tell which people and events are real, composite, or invented?
- Tone: Do pacing and stylistic choices suit the seriousness of the subject?
- Human cost: Do patients’ experiences remain central, rather than receding behind executives and salespeople?
TIME describes director David Yates’s intent as bringing audiences into the broader issue. AP’s review, by contrast, argues that the execution does not deliver enough emotional force or fresh insight. Those views can coexist: a film may aim to widen attention to a subject while still falling short in how it tells its particular story.
