Most often, a black gap between videos is a source handoff problem, not a YouTube connection problem. In OBS, a Media Source can hide itself when its file ends because Show nothing when playback ends is enabled by default. If you use an OBS VLC Video playlist or several sources and scenes instead, check the playlist loop, source visibility, and activation behavior. The exact cause depends on how your stream is set up, so use the checks below to identify it before changing a live broadcast.
First identify how OBS is playing the videos
In the OBS scene that plays the videos, look at the Sources list. The relevant setup is usually one of three types:
- One Media Source: a single file plays, then another file is loaded or a scene changes.
- VLC Video: one source plays a playlist of files.
- Multiple sources or scenes: separate video sources become visible in sequence.
These setups have different end-of-file and visibility settings. OBS’s Media Sources reference documents the Media Source and VLC Video properties; it does not identify which configuration your channel uses.
Check a single Media Source first
Review its end-of-playback behavior
Select the Media Source and inspect Show nothing when playback ends. OBS enables this option by default; it hides the source when its file finishes. If the next video is not yet visible, the scene may show black during the handoff.

If you want the last frame to remain visible until the next clip appears, test the setting with a representative sequence. Changing it alters what happens at the end of the file; it does not by itself guarantee a clean transition. Record the test locally and inspect the clip boundary before applying the change to a continuous broadcast.
Check an OBS VLC Video playlist
Confirm the playlist loops and contains the intended clips
Open the VLC Video source properties. OBS documents Loop Playlist as enabled by default, but verify it is on and check that the expected files are actually in the playlist. A missing, unavailable, or unintended item can interrupt the sequence.

Confirm VLC and visibility behavior
VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to work. The OBS documentation specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Also review the source’s visibility behavior—continue, pause, or stop while it is not visible—and choose the behavior that fits your scene arrangement. Test what happens when the source becomes visible again.
If the gap happens during a scene change
Check whether the incoming source is ready and visible when the scene switches, and whether it is set to restart playback when it becomes active. An OBS forum discussion from 2020 describes a black transition when a newly activated source is initially black; a respondent suggested disabling restart-on-activation for that transition case. That is a community example, not a universal fix, and it may not apply to a gap between items in a playlist.

Test the change in a spare scene or short recording. If disabling restart changes where a clip begins, decide whether that trade-off is acceptable for your sequence rather than assuming it fixes every black interval.
Distinguish a source gap from a delivery problem
Check where the black interval appears:
- OBS preview or local recording: the problem is already present before delivery; focus on the source, file end, playlist, visibility, or scene handoff.
- Only the YouTube stream: compare the local recording with the broadcast and inspect OBS’s dropped-frames counter and connection. OBS’s Help Portal describes dropped frames as a connection or bitrate issue: frames are dropped to avoid buffering. That is a different symptom path from a source being hidden at the end of a file.
Do not assume a source handoff gap is a network fault without checking the preview, recording, and dropped-frames counter.

Test safely before changing a 24/7 broadcast
- Make a short test sequence that includes the end of one representative video and the start of the next.
- Reproduce it in a spare scene or a local recording, using the same source type and visibility behavior as the live scene.
- Inspect the recording at the boundary. If it is black there too, return to the source settings; if it is clean, compare the live destination and OBS’s dropped-frames counter.
- Change one relevant setting at a time and repeat the test so you can tell which change affected the result.
This is a cautious testing workflow, not a claim that a particular fix has been tested on your stream.
Historical VLC playlist reports are not proof of a current failure
An OBS Studio issue opened in 2020 reported unexpected behavior with mixed audio and video files in VLC playlists on OBS 25.0.8 and 26.0.0-rc1. It is a version-specific historical report, not evidence that current VLC Video playlists generally fail. The title does not specify your OBS version, operating system, file formats, scene layout, or where the black interval appears, so those details may matter if the basic checks do not isolate the problem.
