What YouTube fan funding means
YouTube groups channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and Super Thanks under its fan-funding features. The platform describes fan funding as a way to earn extra income while connecting with viewers and building a community. It is separate from selling merchandise or raising money through YouTube Giving.
How each fan-funding feature works

These tools fit different moments: memberships support an ongoing relationship, Chat and Stickers add paid interaction to live chat, and Thanks lets viewers show appreciation on eligible uploaded content. This is a difference in format, not evidence that one feature earns more than another.
Who can turn fan funding on
Creators generally need to be accepted into the YouTube Partner Program, be at least 18, live in a location where the relevant feature is available, accept the Commerce Product Module terms, and comply with applicable policies. Each feature has additional conditions, and availability can depend on both the channel and the content. Requirements and location coverage may change, so check the Earn tab in YouTube Studio and YouTube’s current official requirements for your account.

Expanded YPP access is not universal
YouTube describes an earlier-access tier in eligible locations that requires 500 subscribers, at least three public uploads in the previous 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified public watch hours in the previous 365 days or 3 million qualified Shorts views in the previous 90 days. YouTube lists memberships and Supers among the features available at that tier. These thresholds depend on rollout and location; meeting them does not establish availability in every country or guarantee that each feature is enabled for a particular channel.
How to enable features in YouTube Studio
- Check eligibility: In YouTube Studio, open the Earn tab and review your channel’s available monetization options and any outstanding requirements.
- Accept the applicable terms: Review and accept the Commerce Product Module terms and any feature-specific terms shown for your channel.
- Enable the features you want: Use the setup flow in Studio to turn on each available feature individually. Do not assume enabling one enables the others.
- Set up the viewer-facing offer: For memberships, define the perks you will provide. For live streams and Premieres, check that Super Chat and Super Stickers are available. For Super Thanks, confirm the specific video or Short is eligible.
- Recheck eligibility when something is missing: Availability can depend on location, channel standing, content settings, and feature-specific conditions. Consult the current Studio prompts and YouTube Help pages rather than assuming a missing option is an error.
Super Thanks restrictions and creator share
Super Thanks is not available on age-restricted, unlisted, private, made-for-kids, copyright-claimed, or comments-disabled videos and Shorts. It also cannot be used while a live stream or Premiere is live. A channel may be eligible for the feature while a particular video is not.

YouTube says creators receive 70% of Super Thanks revenue recognized by Google after local sales tax and applicable iOS App Store fees are deducted. YouTube currently covers transaction costs such as credit-card fees. This percentage is specific to Super Thanks; it should not be assumed to describe memberships, Super Chat, or Super Stickers.
Fan funding is not the same as donations or merchandise
YouTube explicitly says Super Thanks is not a crowdfunding or donation tool: it is a platform purchase tied to interaction with a video. YouTube Giving is a separate nonprofit fundraising feature. Shopping, product tagging, and official branded merchandise are other monetization routes, not prerequisites for enabling fan funding. A creator does not need to sell a physical product to use these fan-funding features.

Keeping a YouTube live stream running is a separate choice
Fan funding features are about viewer payments and interaction, not the technical method used to keep a stream live.
