OBS “dropped frames” usually point to a network connection that cannot reliably sustain the stream’s bitrate. Two other OBS counters—rendering lag and encoding lag—indicate local graphics or encoder workload instead. Check which counter is rising before changing settings; the fix depends on the cause.
First identify which OBS counter is rising
Open View > Stats in OBS while streaming. Record the counters and elapsed time before changing anything. “Dropped frames” refers to network loss; “frames missed due to rendering lag” and “skipped frames due to encoding lag” indicate local processing limits. A 24/7 schedule alone does not identify the cause, and without your OBS log, machine details, and network measurements, it is not possible to diagnose a particular setup.
- Dropped frames (network): OBS cannot maintain a stable connection to the ingest server or the connection cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. OBS says it is “extremely unlikely” that OBS Studio itself causes this network category of dropped frames. That statement does not apply to rendering or encoding lag. OBS network troubleshooting
- Rendering lag: OBS is not rendering and compositing scenes quickly enough, often because of GPU contention or demanding sources, filters, or output settings. OBS performance troubleshooting
- Encoding lag: The selected encoder cannot encode frames quickly enough for the workload. The limit may be CPU or hardware-encoder capacity; check the log and encoder messages rather than assuming new hardware is needed. OBS performance troubleshooting
Viewer buffering is a separate symptom: viewers’ devices, locations, and connections vary, so they can buffer even when OBS has not dropped frames. OBS network troubleshooting
Fix network-dropped frames
If the network-dropped counter climbs, start with upload capacity and connection stability. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; a shared connection may offer less capacity to your stream at busy times. YouTube network guidance

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Check the configured bitrate against stable upload capacity. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include the following targets. They are platform guidance, not proof that a particular internet connection can sustain them.
| H.264 output | YouTube-listed minimum | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
Recommendations vary with codec, resolution, and frame rate. See YouTube’s encoder settings for its current guidance. Do not select a bitrate solely because it appears in a platform table: YouTube says total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% room below it. YouTube network guidance
- Test the connection used by the streaming computer. If practical, try a reliable wired connection instead of Wi-Fi and check whether other users or devices are consuming upload capacity. A Cat6 Ethernet cable may help establish a wired link when the problem is network instability; it will not fix rendering or encoding lag.
- Compare ingest servers when available. If OBS offers another suitable server, test it and compare the network counter under similar conditions. A different route may be more stable for your connection.
- Change one setting at a time. Compare the same counter over a useful interval. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the real stream and monitoring stream health. YouTube encoder guidance
Fix rendering lag
Rendering is the work OBS does to compose the scene before encoding it. If the rendering-lag counter rises, reduce that work and GPU contention first. OBS’s performance guidance includes lowering output resolution or frame rate and simplifying scenes. OBS performance troubleshooting

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Close other GPU-heavy applications.
- If a game is part of the scene, cap its frame rate or enable V-Sync where applicable so it does not monopolize GPU time.
- Simplify complex scenes; review costly browser sources and filters.
- Lower output resolution or frame rate, then monitor whether rendering lag falls. Lowering frame rate can reduce both rendering and encoding work.
- On Windows, try running OBS as administrator if GPU overload is suspected, as OBS suggests.
Fix encoding overload
If “skipped frames due to encoding lag” rises, reduce the work demanded of the encoder. Lower output resolution or frame rate and review other demanding settings. The relevant limit depends on the chosen encoder and computer; read the OBS log for the encoder in use and any overload messages before considering a hardware upgrade. OBS performance troubleshooting
Check YouTube’s stream settings
For the RTMP/RTMPS guidance on YouTube’s encoder settings page, use CBR, set a two-second keyframe interval, and do not exceed four seconds. YouTube lists frame rates up to 60 fps; bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. These settings do not substitute for sufficient, stable upload bandwidth. What changes when the stream runs 24/7?
A continuous schedule does not change how to interpret OBS’s counters, but it does make YouTube’s archive behavior important. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends keeping a local recording as a backup. If you need both a multi-day watch page and a complete replay, plan for archive segmentation and local storage before going live. YouTube live stream archiving

If the aim is to keep uploaded documentaries playing on YouTube, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a home computer or connection staying on. It streams uploaded videos, not a live camera.
