His answer to the challenge was to find his own way into a character audiences had already seen—and, with a light touch, to ask: “Well, why not me?”
Why did Harrison Ford take over the role?
Ford plays Ross in Captain America: Brave New World, succeeding Hurt, who had previously portrayed the character. In remarks attributed to Ford in an Empire interview, he acknowledged the pressure of following Hurt: “I was a little concerned about taking over from Bill Hurt, who was a wonderful actor.” CinemaBlend reported the comment, as did The Independent.
Ford’s explanation was about the acting challenge, not a disclosed casting negotiation: he wanted to understand what the filmmakers were looking for, be useful to them, and find the right way to assume a role audiences already knew from another actor. He said he was only slightly familiar with Marvel, then joked, “Well, why not me?” The remark reads as a wry acceptance of the opportunity; it does not establish a particular business motive or mean he was unfamiliar with every part of Marvel.
What changes for Ross in the film?
Ross’s role in the story has evolved. CinemaBlend describes him as having been Secretary of State and becoming president in the film; ComicBook.com likewise outlines his progression from military general to Secretary of State and then president. That context helps explain why Ford was taking on a character with an established history, rather than simply repeating Hurt’s performance.

How did the director describe Ford’s Red Hulk performance?
Director Julius Onah offered an enthusiastic reaction to Ford’s performance as Red Hulk, saying, “It’s really great to get back to a Hulk that is just fucking breaking shit, and a rage monster.” That is Onah’s colorful description of the character and his response to the performance—not a general critical consensus or a measurable assessment of the film.
