Spoilers for the Season 1 finale of Smoke. In “Mirror Mirror,” Michelle Calderone arrests Dave Gudsen after he tries to kill her during a wildfire, but he never confesses and the series ends before a trial. Its final reveal shows that the heroic-looking Dave viewers have watched is the self-image he projects—not his actual appearance. The twist sharpens the show’s portrait of his delusion, though the abrupt escalation and unresolved legal outcome may leave the finale feeling less conclusive than its buildup promises.
What happens in the Smoke finale?
“Mirror Mirror” is the ninth and final episode of Smoke Season 1. Apple released it on August 15, 2025, as the end of a weekly run that began with the first two episodes on June 27. Apple describes the series as fictional and inspired by true events and the Firebug podcast; it stars Taron Egerton as arson investigator Dave Gudsen and Jurnee Smollett as detective Michelle Calderone. Apple’s series page identifies “Mirror Mirror” as the season finale.

Michelle enters the episode trying to contain the consequences of her own actions. After accidentally wounding Captain Steven Burke, she lets him die and sets fire to his home to destroy evidence. She also plants a glove carrying Dave’s DNA to direct suspicion toward him. The fire grows beyond her control, becoming a wildfire that draws both her and Dave into a final confrontation.
As they race through the woods toward the blaze, Dave reveals that he is one of the arsonists. He causes a car crash intended to kill Michelle, but she survives and fights him. She gets him at gunpoint; when rain breaks the standoff, she reads him his rights and arrests him.

Does Dave confess, and is he convicted?
No. At the station, Dave denies the accusations and tries to recast the evidence rather than admit what he has done. Michelle confronts him with his manuscript and the correspondences between its contents and unsolved arsons. Esposito adds a photograph of the disguise found in Dave’s impounded car. Dave still refuses to confess. As creator Dennis Lehane put it in an interview with TIME, “He will deny, deny, and attack, attack, attack.”
The finale stops before a trial, so it does not establish whether Dave will be convicted or what sentence he might receive. The arrest is the story’s immediate resolution; the legal outcome is left open.
Why does Dave look different in the final scene?
The final appearance reveal shows Dave as older and heavier than the heroic-looking figure viewers have seen throughout the season. It is not presented as a split-personality diagnosis. Lehane described the device as projection: “No, he’s projecting! That storyline is about his projection. He’s projecting who he is,” he told Variety.
The reveal makes the gap between Dave’s self-image and his conduct visible. He sees himself as a hero even while committing terrible acts, and the image he projects protects that story from the evidence around him. Smollett called the twist “such a cool twist. An unexpected twist” in an interview with Tom’s Guide.

Does the twist work, or does the ending fizzle?
The visual reveal gives the title “Mirror Mirror” a pointed payoff: the finale is concerned with how Dave sees himself, not simply with whether investigators can identify him. The twist can make his earlier confidence look like a performance built around a private heroic fantasy. But its force depends on whether viewers find that self-mythologizing sufficiently established before the final image. If the reveal feels like a last-minute shock rather than the culmination of the season’s clues, its meaning may arrive more clearly than its setup.
The arrest has a firmer evidence trail than a sudden confession would have. Michelle brings the manuscript’s links to unsolved fires into the interrogation, and the photograph of the disguise adds a concrete connection to Dave. That makes her case legible even as he denies it. Yet the sequence also asks viewers to follow a major tonal shift: a psychological crime drama builds toward a large wildfire, a crash, and a gunpoint confrontation. The spectacle makes for an intense climax, but some may find that it overwhelms the more intimate cat-and-mouse story that came before.

The unresolved trial has a similar trade-off. Ending with Dave in custody preserves uncertainty about what happens next, but it also withholds the courtroom reckoning that might have tested the evidence and settled his fate. Whether that feels purposeful or simply incomplete is a matter of judgment; the finale does not answer it onscreen.

Michelle’s arrest of Dave does not make her an uncomplicated moral counterweight. She has concealed her role in Burke’s death, destroyed evidence by setting the fire, and planted Dave’s DNA to misdirect suspicion. Her pursuit of a guilty man unfolds alongside a cover-up of her own, leaving the finale with two compromised characters rather than a straightforward detective-versus-killer resolution.

What the finale establishes—and what it leaves open
- Established: Michelle arrests Dave after he tries to kill her during the wildfire confrontation.
- Established: Dave’s final appearance represents his projected self-image, not a medical diagnosis, according to Lehane.
- Unresolved: Dave does not confess, and the story ends before his trial or conviction.
- Unresolved: Michelle’s own cover-up remains part of the moral fallout rather than a problem the arrest erases.
