Moses Babatope says his connection to the documentary MKO is personal: his father worked at Concord Newspapers, founded by Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola. Babatope, managing director of Nile Entertainment, also says the film can help preserve Nigeria’s political history and bring the June 12 crisis to younger generations.
Babatope’s personal connection to Abiola
Babatope has said that his father’s work at Concord Newspapers gave the Abiola story a direct connection to his family. Concord was one of the institutions founded by Abiola. As reported by Voice of Nigeria, Babatope put it this way: “The story of MKO Abiola is particularly personal to me because my father worked at Concord Newspapers, one of the institutions founded by Chief MKO Abiola. So, his legacy has always had a personal connection to my family.”
Nile Entertainment, which Babatope leads, handled the documentary’s Nigerian theatrical distribution. His stated reason for supporting its release goes beyond that family link: he sees the film as a way to keep a consequential period of Nigeria’s political history accessible, particularly for people too young to have experienced the June 12 crisis first-hand.
What Babatope says the film is meant to do
Babatope describes the documentary as a contribution to preserving Nigeria’s political history and sharing it with younger audiences. In his words, as reported by Voice of Nigeria: “Beyond that personal connection, I believe this documentary is an important contribution to the preservation of Nigeria’s political history. MKO Abiola’s story is one of the most defining periods in our nation’s democratic journey, and it is important that this history is documented and made accessible, particularly to the younger generation.”

That purpose is also reflected in filmmaker Ose Oyamendan’s description of the film. Voice of Nigeria quoted him saying the story concerns “memory, power, courage, sacrifice and the consequences of political choices” and is an opportunity to look back at what happened after June 12, 1993, to understand it as well as remember it. This is the filmmaker’s stated intent, not a claim that the documentary alone settles historical debate.
What the documentary covers
The film centres on Abiola’s political journey, the June 12, 1993 presidential election and its annulment, and the struggle and political crisis that followed. The official film page describes MKO as an investigative documentary about a man, an election and the international dimension of the crisis. Its filmmaker statement says Oyamendan worked at Weekend Concord as a young journalist and regarded Abiola as his publisher.

Voice of Nigeria reports that the documentary follows events through Abiola’s death in detention in 1998, combining archival footage with first-hand testimony. Its report names former military leader Ibrahim Babangida, former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar, former president Olusegun Obasanjo, Wole Soyinka, Abiola’s running mate Babagana Kingibe, former US officials Walter Carrington and Thomas Pickering, former Canadian High Commissioner Gerald Ohlsen, family members, foreign journalists and Abiola’s former security guard Theodore Zadok among the participants. That is a reported selection, not necessarily a complete list.
The official page’s account of the film and its sources represents the filmmakers’ framing. A description of the documentary as investigative, or the presence of testimony, should not be treated by itself as independent verification of every historical interpretation it presents.
