At the close of the 83rd Golden Globe Awards on January 11, 2026, host Nikki Glaser wore a black cap bearing the name This Is Spinal Tap as a brief tribute to director Rob Reiner. As she signed off, she said, “This one went to 11.”
What happened at the end of the Golden Globes?
Glaser wore the Spinal Tap cap while bidding farewell at the end of the ceremony, held at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills. The Associated Press described it as a tribute to Reiner, who directed the original film and its sequel. ABC News also reported the gesture as a nod to Reiner and his wife, Michele. The phrase points to one of the best-known jokes in This Is Spinal Tap (1984), Reiner’s mockumentary about a fictional heavy-metal band. In the film, a guitarist explains that his amplifier’s volume dial reaches 11 rather than stopping at 10—an absurd way of claiming it can go louder. The line made Glaser’s hat reference legible without turning the sign-off into a longer speech.
Why was the cap notable?
The gesture came during a broadcast that, according to the Associated Press, had no in-memoriam segment and no telecast tributes to notable people who died the previous year, including Reiner. Glaser’s cap therefore served as a concise, film-specific acknowledgment at the end of the show. [Associated Press]

This Is Spinal Tap is Reiner’s 1984 comedy, presented as a documentary about the fictional band Spinal Tap. The hat’s wording and Glaser’s closing line pointed to the film rather than to a general Golden Globes tradition. Criterion lists a director-approved 4K UHD and Blu-ray special edition.
