News agencies withdrew or restricted the use of a family photograph released by Kensington Palace on March 10, 2024, after editors spotted apparent inconsistencies they considered incompatible with their image standards. That raised concerns about editing; it did not establish that the photograph was fabricated. The available reporting does not establish that this was Catherine’s most recent photograph.
Which photograph prompted the agencies’ concerns?
The image showed Catherine, Princess of Wales, with her children and was issued by Kensington Palace for UK Mother’s Day. The Associated Press described it as the first official photograph released after Catherine underwent abdominal surgery. The AP’s March 10, 2024 report covered its release and the response from news organizations.
The photograph drew broad attention after its release. AP reported nearly 50 million X views by the end of March 10, 2024; that was a platform view count, not a count of unique people or evidence of what viewers believed. AP reported the figure.
Why did news agencies withdraw it?
Editors examining the image after publication identified details that appeared not to align. AP said it withdrew the photograph because it appeared to have been manipulated in a way that did not meet the agency’s photo standards. AP pointed to an inconsistency in the alignment of Princess Charlotte’s left hand. AP’s account described its decision.

Reuters also withdrew the image. Its picture editors reportedly found that part of Charlotte’s cardigan sleeve did not line up properly, suggesting alteration. Reuters reported on the withdrawal. Getty Images and AFP were also among the organizations that withdrew or restricted use of the photograph, according to AP’s contemporaneous report.
These were editorial and distribution decisions by the agencies, based on their own standards and examination of the image. The agencies’ concerns about visible inconsistencies are not, by themselves, proof of who made a particular edit or how the full image was produced.

Did the photograph turn out to be fake?
No. The reported concerns establish that agencies judged the image’s apparent editing or inconsistencies serious enough to withdraw or restrict it. AP explicitly reported that there was no suggestion the photograph was fake. The available reporting does not establish the photograph’s complete edit history or prove fabrication.
What did Catherine say after the withdrawals?
Contemporaneous ABC reporting said Catherine apologized for confusion caused by the edited image and said she occasionally experiments with editing. ABC’s report is a secondary account of her statement; no direct quotation is included here because the original post was not verified in the reporting cited above.

Does “most recent” accurately describe the photo?
The photograph at the center of the agencies’ concerns was released on March 10, 2024. The cited reporting does not provide a complete chronology of Catherine’s later photographs, so it cannot establish that this was her most recent image as of October 8, 2026. It is more precise to identify it by its release date rather than call it the latest.
