Nelly said he agreed to perform at the Liberty Inaugural Ball because he considered it an honor to perform for the president and a way to show respect for the presidency—not an appeal for people to vote for Donald Trump. He also said he would have performed if Joe Biden or Kamala Harris had asked him.
Where Nelly was scheduled to perform
Nelly was announced as a performer at the Liberty Inaugural Ball on January 20, 2025. The Associated Press schedule listed the ball as one of three official inaugural balls and named Jason Aldean and the Village People on the same lineup. It was a separate event from the daytime swearing-in ceremony. The AP’s event schedule identifies the ball and its announced performers.
Why Nelly said he agreed to perform
In remarks reported by The Guardian on January 20, 2025, Nelly described the invitation as an honor and said he respected the office of the presidency regardless of who held it. “This isn’t politics. The politics, for me, is over. [Trump] won! He’s the president,” he said, according to The Guardian’s account of an interview with Willie D. He added that it was an honor to perform for the president of the United States, “regardless of who is in office.”
Nelly also said he would have performed if Biden had asked, and that he would have done so if Harris had won and invited him. When asked whether he supported Trump, he replied that he supported the president of the United States regardless of who was in office and respected the office. These are the statements as reproduced in The Guardian’s report, rather than a transcript independently verified here.

Did Nelly endorse Trump or ask people to vote for him?
Nelly said he was not telling anyone to vote for a particular candidate. In the Guardian-reported interview, he urged listeners to do their own homework and decide what best helps them and the people they care for and provide for. That is his stated distinction between accepting a performance invitation and advocating for a candidate; it does not establish what any listener should conclude about the political meaning of appearing at the event.
The planned performance drew criticism, but the reporting does not show that every critic objected for the same reason. The central facts are the announced appearance and Nelly’s own explanation of it.

What his earlier comments do—and do not—show
The Guardian also recalled a 2017 comment Nelly made to Page Six: “I liked Donald Trump, I did, I just don’t like Donald Trump as my president.” That earlier remark provides context, but neither it nor his 2025 explanation establishes his current political affiliation or how he voted.
In broader coverage of the 2025 inauguration, the Associated Press characterized entertainers including Nelly and the Village People as more publicly associated with the incoming administration than entertainers had been at Trump’s first inauguration. That is AP’s description of a wider entertainment-industry trend, not Nelly’s personal rationale for accepting the ball invitation. AP’s broader coverage provides that context.
