Neil deGrasse Tyson’s public comments about Elon Musk are mixed: he has praised Musk’s ambition and SpaceX’s engineering, while questioning whether every Musk vision is realistic and whether private companies can lead costly, risky Mars exploration on their own.
What did Tyson say about Musk?
The clearest direct answer came in a TMZ interview reported by Futurism on October 4, 2022. Tyson compared Musk to Thomas Edison, but immediately qualified the praise: “Elon Musk is like a modern day Thomas Edison, right? He dreams big. And I don’t think all of his dreams are realistic, but that doesn’t matter, because he’s dreaming big.”
That is admiration for Musk’s scale of ambition, not an endorsement of every plan. Tyson also said, “I’m all for progress. I’m all for people seeing a world that they can invent. A better world, where people are happier, safer… that’s what science brings you.”
Does Tyson support Musk and SpaceX?
Tyson has described his position on SpaceX as both critical and supportive. In a 2017 Reddit AMA, quoted by Live Science on April 4, 2017, he said, “I’m simultaneously one of SpaceX’s biggest critics and supporters.” He specifically welcomed reusable rockets: “Any demonstration of rocket reusability is a good thing.”

His reservations concern the economics and risks of exploration, rather than a blanket rejection of SpaceX. Tyson argued that dangerous, expensive projects with uncertain returns are difficult for profit-driven companies to lead without government participation. In his account, public institutions can absorb the early costs and risks; private firms may be better positioned to follow when costs and prospects are clearer.
Why does Tyson distinguish SpaceX’s engineering from exploration?
Tyson’s comments separate making spaceflight technology better from taking humanity to a new destination. A 2025 Open Culture account of his StarTalk discussion says Tyson argued that SpaceX had not taken humanity beyond what NASA had already achieved, while acknowledging that SpaceX advances rocket engineering and does so more cheaply.

The distinction is about what counts as progress. Reusability and lower-cost launches can be major engineering gains without, by themselves, marking a new human exploration frontier. Tyson’s broader argument is that governments have often undertaken costly exploration first, with private enterprise entering later. As quoted in Open Culture’s account, he said: “Nations lead expensive projects, and when the costs of these projects are understood, the risks are quantified, and the time frames are established, then private enterprise comes in later, to see if they can make a buck off of it.”

Taken together, Tyson’s public remarks support a more precise conclusion than either “he supports Musk” or “he is against Musk.” He has praised Musk’s ambition and SpaceX’s technical achievements, while questioning feasibility and who should bear the risks of ambitious exploration.
