MSCHF’s 2023 project, The Free Movie, invited people to trace frames from Bee Movie as a collective act of internet play—and as a provocation about who owns and preserves culture. MSCHF planned to assemble 65,520 hand-traced frames into a full-length version and release it free online. That was the project’s launch-era plan, not a verified account of its completion.

What participants were asked to do

The Free Movie was a web-based project launched by MSCHF in July 2023. Participants used digital tools on the project site to trace individual frames from DreamWorks’ 2007 animated film Bee Movie. MSCHF’s stated plan was to join 65,520 traced frames into a full-length recreation for free online release. Creative Collaboration / CC Startup and Highsnobiety reported that frame count in 2023.

That method made participants contributors to a reconstruction rather than viewers simply downloading or sharing a conventional copy. Highsnobiety described the distinction from ordinary bootlegging, but that description does not establish whether the project was lawful or unlawful.

Why choose Bee Movie?

MSCHF chose a film with a strong online identity: its memorable, often surreal scenes had already made it familiar as a meme. That recognition gave strangers a common source to work from and made the premise legible without needing a new story or cast of characters. The frame-by-frame task turned that familiarity into a shared activity: each person could contribute a small piece to a much larger object.

Why make the recreation a crowd project?

MSCHF framed the project as a response to what it saw as the fading optimism of collective online play. In an email to Mashable, as relayed by Creative Collaboration / CC Startup, MSCHF said: “The golden age of collaborative internet action (Reddit Place and Button, Moon, others) reflect an optimism about collective play online that has dwindled as the internet has matured.” It continued: “No one feels particularly hopeful for situations where a crowd of people can just come together and fuck around. Free Movie is, of course, a guided prompt, but comes from that same, perhaps outdated, hopefulness.”

In that framing, tracing a film was not just a way to produce an alternate version; it was the prompt that brought people together. The project’s deliberately repetitive labor made collective participation visible, even though the sources do not establish how many people took part or how much of the film was completed.

What the project was saying about cultural ownership

MSCHF also used the exercise to pose questions about copying, access and control. Creative Collaboration / CC Startup reports the group’s line that “Free Movie’s central impulse of crowd ownership of culture is under threat.” Coverage connected that argument to wider concerns about media disappearing from platforms and the power to control access to cultural works.

MSCHF’s provocative statement, “We like it when people steal from companies, and not the other way around,” belongs to that rhetoric about who has power over culture; it is not a legal conclusion. The project stages an argument about collective access and ownership. It does not demonstrate that piracy is necessary for preservation, establish that MSCHF’s recreation was legally permitted, or show that the project changed copyright law.

Was it piracy, and is the film available now?

The method—participants tracing frames through a website rather than simply downloading a conventional copy—helps explain why the project attracted questions about piracy. It does not settle them. The coverage cited here does not establish the project’s legal status, and no legal ruling should be inferred from MSCHF’s framing or from the project’s planned free release.

The launch-era plan was to publish a free, full-length recreation, but the readable material on the MSCHF project site, checked September 27, 2026, does not confirm whether the film was completed, whether submissions remain open, or where a finished version can be viewed. Its current availability therefore remains unresolved.
