Ars Technica reported that a Microsoft spokesperson said Persson’s online comments and opinions “do not reflect those of Microsoft or Mojang, and are not representative of Minecraft.” The spokesperson was not named, and the report did not identify who made the invitation decision.
What happened at Minecraft’s 10th anniversary
Mojang planned a press event at its Stockholm studio for May 17, 2019, to mark Minecraft’s tenth anniversary. In an April 29 report, Ars Technica said Persson would not attend and was not involved in the event. The article described his absence as a deliberate decision.
Ars Technica also reported that Persson’s name remained in the game’s credits at the time. That is a detail about the credits in 2019, not evidence of their current state or of his present relationship with Mojang.
What Microsoft said about the decision
According to Ars Technica, an unnamed Microsoft spokesperson explained that Persson’s comments and opinions “do not reflect those of Microsoft or Mojang, and are not representative of Minecraft.” That is the reported company rationale; the available account does not name the spokesperson, identify the person who made the decision, or provide an original Microsoft announcement.

What online conduct was cited
Ars Technica characterized several of Persson’s public posts and endorsements as racist, homophobic, or transphobic, and cited examples in its report. Those descriptions are the publication’s characterization of the reported posts, not a finding from an independent adjudication. The article noted that some posts had been deleted; that qualification matters when describing them.
The distinction is useful: the conduct examples provide context for the story, while Microsoft’s reported explanation was that Persson’s comments and opinions did not represent the company or the game. The report does not establish a more specific internal rationale or decision process.

How this fits with Minecraft’s community principles
Minecraft’s current Community Standards affirm the Xbox Community Standards and emphasize inclusion, diversity, and safety, including the statement “Hate has no place here.” Those public-facing standards describe the community principles today; they do not establish what happened in private deliberations over the 2019 anniversary event.
A 2020 Mojang article discussed moderation tools for online messages and specified multiplayer spaces, distinguishing those spaces from single-player content, which it said was not moderated. This is historical context from 2020, not a complete account of current moderation policy.

Persson’s connection to Minecraft
Ars Technica reported that Persson sold Minecraft and the company he had built to Microsoft in 2014 for $2.5 billion. That figure is the amount reported by Ars Technica; it is not drawn here from the original transaction announcement. The 2019 event story concerns his exclusion from a particular anniversary gathering, not a definitive account of his current relationship with Mojang.
