Contemporary reports said he directed racist slurs at Black audience members. His explanation accounts for how he described his state of mind; it does not make the outburst a prepared fictional performance.
What happened at the Laugh Factory?
During a Friday-night stand-up performance at the Laugh Factory in Hollywood in November 2006, Richards reacted to audience members who were heckling or talking during his act. Contemporary reports said he directed racist slurs at Black audience members and continued after people objected. The crowd gasped, and some people left, according to the Los Angeles Times and The Guardian.
The reporting describes an angry outburst during a live set, not an established, prepared character. The incident account here is based on contemporary journalism; it is not a claim of an independent review of the original video.
Why did Richards say he “went into character”?
Appearing on The Late Show with David Letterman with Jerry Seinfeld after the incident, Richards described the heckling and his reaction: “I was at a comedy club trying to do my act, and I got heckled and I took it badly and went into a rage.” He also described his performance style: “I do a lot of free association, it’s spontaneous, I go into character.” The Los Angeles Times reported both remarks.

Those comments are Richards’s account of his reaction and performance style. They do not establish that the racist language was part of a fictional character or a planned routine.
Did Michael Richards apologize?
Yes. On the Letterman program, Richards said: “For me to be in a comedy club and flip out and say this crap, I’m deeply, deeply sorry.” The apology followed his description of taking the heckling badly and going into a rage, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

While promoting his memoir Entrances and Exits in 2024, Richards returned to the episode in television interviews. He again used the language of going into character and reflected on his anger and withdrawal from show business. Those interviews document his later retrospective account; they do not replace the contemporary reporting of what happened at the club. See the 2024 coverage at Today and CBS News.
