Michael Richards’s later reflection was not that he regretted taking Kramer seriously. It was that, after years of thinking about the role, he wished he had performed better. He revisited Seinfeld while preparing his memoir and found watching the episodes again an enjoyable experience.
What Richards said he wished he had done differently
The headline’s idea of regret needs a distinction: the available accounts do not establish “I regret taking Kramer so seriously” as Richards’s exact words. The Los Angeles Times reported that he had spent many years haunted by thoughts about how much better his performance on Seinfeld could have been. That is self-criticism about his work, not a complaint that he devoted too much care to the character.

In a separate 2024 interview, Richards said he had not wanted to believe agents who warned that moving beyond Kramer would take work. He also recalled finding it difficult to get work better than what he had done on the show. Those comments concern the challenge of following a career-defining role; they are distinct from his reflection on the performance itself.
How Richards built Kramer’s physical comedy
Clothes chosen for the character
Richards described searching second-hand shops throughout Southern California for clothes that suited Kramer. ABC News reported his account of accumulating more than 60 shirts, jackets, and pants, alongside just two pairs of shoes—the shoes he felt comfortable performing in. These are Richards’s reported figures, not an independently verified inventory.

He told ABC News, “I combed every second-hand shop here in Southern California looking for a particular clothing out of the 60s.” The clothes were one part of a performance he shaped deliberately rather than treating Kramer as a collection of improvised quirks.
Movement instead of explanation
In an interview with the Rich Eisen Show, Richards recalled asking to do comic business on screen rather than have Kramer explain it in dialogue. He said he had the physical means to make people laugh through his body. His account points to movement, timing, clothing, and repeated refinement as central elements of the character’s comedy.

Why he watched Seinfeld again
Richards told the Rich Eisen Show that writing about Seinfeld and Kramer’s development led him to revisit episodes. He watched the series in sequence with his son while working on his memoir, Entrances and Exits, and said he enjoyed the experience. What began as writing about Kramer expanded into a book about his broader life and career.
That return to the show offers a useful context for his later self-criticism: he was looking back at the work closely, while considering both how he made the character and what the role meant in his career. It does not turn his reflection into a direct statement that he regretted taking Kramer seriously.

Kramer’s place in Richards’s career
ABC News reported that Richards played Kramer for all nine seasons of Seinfeld and won three Emmys for the role. Kramer’s first name, Cosmo, was assigned in the show’s sixth season. The character became so closely associated with Richards that, in his retrospective account to the Saturday Evening Post, he described having resisted agents’ warnings that it would take effort to shake off the role.
Richards said he had thought of himself as an actor with many kinds of parts to play, including “heavies” and comedy roles, and wondered, “so what’s the problem?” His later account suggests he did not fully appreciate at the time how difficult it could be to find a role that matched the achievement of Seinfeld.
