Michael Bublé said he declined invitations to join The Voice about 15–16 times because he did not feel comfortable judging singers he considered better than himself. He eventually saw a way to take part that felt different: as a coach, helping performers rather than judging them.
Why did Michael Bublé keep turning down The Voice?
In a 2024 interview on Today, Bublé explained that he felt he had no place judging contestants when many, in his view, sang better than he did. American Songwriter’s contemporaneous report said he had turned down invitations more than 15 times; Antena 1 later reported the figure as 15–16. The count comes from Bublé’s interview account as reported by those outlets, not from an independent tally.

“Thank God we’re not judges,” Bublé said in the interview, as quoted by American Songwriter. “The other shows have judges. We are coaches. Most of the singers are better than me, and I have no place ever judging anyone. So, to get to coach them and live the fantasy of having this career that I’ve had and then get to have the fulfillment of helping someone else get that? That’s the cool part.”
What changed his mind about joining the show?
The distinction was the role. Bublé said judging felt like evaluating singers, while coaching appealed to him as a chance to help someone develop and pursue a music career. That is his explanation for accepting the invitation, not a claim that the two roles work the same way on every version of the format.

When did Bublé join The Voice?
Bublé made his coaching debut on Season 26 on September 23, 2024, according to the Recording Academy. His fellow coaches that season were Snoop Dogg, Reba McEntire, and Gwen Stefani. The Recording Academy’s October 2024 interview also placed his television debut in the context of a career built after years of pursuing music, but it does not independently confirm how many times he had declined the show.
