The double role is the film’s quiet casting reveal: Elizabeth is part of Victor’s present, while Claire is his deceased mother. Their connection gives the pairing a thematic resonance, but the characters are distinct—not one person in two forms.
Who does Mia Goth play in Frankenstein?
Netflix’s official cast guide lists Goth as both Elizabeth Lavenza and Claire Frankenstein. Elizabeth is engaged to Victor’s younger brother, William, and is drawn to the Creature. Claire is Victor and William’s mother, who has died before the film’s main events.

So, yes: Goth plays Victor Frankenstein’s mother as well as Elizabeth. Claire is a film character in del Toro’s adaptation; the available official sources do not establish that this role or this double casting comes from Mary Shelley’s novel.
Why pair Elizabeth with Victor’s mother?
The two roles place different kinds of intimacy around Victor. Elizabeth is a woman he desires in the present; Claire represents a maternal bond and a childhood that is gone. Netflix Tudum frames Goth’s parts as “not only Victor’s present-day obsession, but also the embodiment of maternal comfort and his lost childhood innocence.” That is Tudum’s interpretation of the casting, rather than a claim that Elizabeth and Claire are literally the same person.

- Lending his burlesque touch to 1970s genre revision, Mel Brooks followed his hit "western" Blazing Saddles with this parody of 1930s Universal horror movies. Determined to live down his family's reputation, Dr. Frederick Frankenstein (co-screenwriter Gene Wilder) insists on pronouncing his name "Fronckensteen" and denies interest in replicating his grandfather's experiments. It also makes the casting more than a surprise name in the credits. Viewers meet Goth in one role, then can recognize a thematic echo in the other: Victor’s adult fixation and his longing for maternal comfort sit side by side. Calling that a clever hidden trick is an editorial judgment, not a reported consensus or an officially ranked feature of the film.
How did Goth discover the second role?
Goth said she initially expected to play only Elizabeth. In her Netflix Tudum interview, she described the role developing through early conversations with del Toro and recalled the moment Elizabeth came into focus: “I tried on a dress for the first time, and it clicked.”
She also described a maternal quality in Elizabeth, complicating any simple split between the roles: “As much as Claire is Victor’s mother, I also think there’s an incredibly maternal side to Elizabeth.” And on Elizabeth’s response to the Creature, Goth said: “When she sees the Creature for the first time, there’s an immediate connection there.” These are Goth’s reflections on her characters, not evidence of a particular audience response.

Del Toro’s film adapts Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, first published in 1818, but Claire’s role and Goth’s double casting should be understood as details of this film unless a more specific comparison is established. Netflix describes the film’s structure as an icebound prelude followed by “Victor’s Tale” and “The Creature’s Tale.” That framing gives the story room to present both creator and creation, while Goth’s two roles connect Victor’s present attachments to his lost family life.
