McDonald’s became “WcDonald’s” for a limited time in February 2024 by turning its Golden Arches upside down. The “W” was an anime and manga reference: WcDonald’s is a recurring fictional fast-food brand used as a parody of McDonald’s. The campaign expanded the visual joke into special sauce, WcNuggets, manga packaging, original anime shorts, and an immersive dining event.
The “W” was an upside-down McDonald’s logo—not a permanent name change
If you saw a McDonald’s sign, food carton, or cup displaying a “W” instead of the familiar golden “M,” you were looking at WcDonald’s: a limited-time anime-inspired campaign launched on February 26, 2024.
McDonald’s temporarily inverted its Golden Arches so the logo would resemble the fictional fast-food chain that has appeared in anime and manga for decades. WcDonald’s is a recognizable parody of McDonald’s, used when creators want an almost-familiar restaurant without using the real company’s name or branding.
The campaign was not a corporate rebrand. McDonald’s did not permanently change its name, logo, or restaurant identity. It turned a long-running fan and creator joke into a global promotion involving special food, manga-style packaging, digital comics, original anime shorts, and a live event.

Why turning the arches upside down creates a “W”
The campaign’s central visual joke is simple: rotate the Golden Arches, and the familiar “M” can be read as a “W.” That turns McDonald’s into “WcDonald’s,” immediately signaling a fictional or parody version of the restaurant.
This convention had already become part of anime and manga’s visual language. Across many titles and thousands of scenes, fictional restaurants resembling McDonald’s have used names such as WcDonald’s. The substitute branding lets creators evoke a globally recognizable fast-food chain while avoiding the need to use McDonald’s official name or license its trademarks.
McDonald’s chose to embrace that association rather than challenge it. The company presented WcDonald’s as an idea fans had effectively been inviting into anime culture for years. In that sense, the upside-down logo was not merely a novelty: it was the campaign’s way of acknowledging a piece of fan-created shorthand.
What McDonald’s launched in February 2024
The WcDonald’s activation ran in more than 30 global markets. Its centerpiece was the Savory Chili WcDonald’s Sauce, described as a combination of ginger, garlic, soy, and chili-flake heat.
Customers could order the sauce with a 10-piece WcNuggets meal or use it with other menu items. The product choice was strategically fitting: the sauce gave customers something new to try, while McNuggets provided a familiar product that could carry the WcDonald’s name.
The sauce was explicitly limited-time. It should not be described as a product that remains generally available in 2026. Later official descriptions of the campaign’s extended-cut videos also note that the sauce is no longer available.

Acky Bright turned the packaging into manga
McDonald’s commissioned Japanese manga artist and illustrator Acky Bright to create the campaign’s packaging. The designs featured WcDonald’s crew members and customers, giving the boxes and wrappers the appearance of pages from an anime or manga world rather than ordinary fast-food packaging.
QR codes on the packaging unlocked weekly digital manga releases. These stories introduced characters including Hashirune, Mr. Bev, and the mecha character WcDizer 3000.
That packaging made the purchase part of the campaign’s story. A customer was not simply buying nuggets and dipping sauce; they could scan the box, discover another installment, and follow a set of characters. The physical packaging therefore served as advertising, collectible artwork, and a gateway to digital content at the same time.
Studio Pierrot made four official WcDonald’s anime shorts
The most ambitious part of the promotion was a collaboration with Studio Pierrot, the Japanese animation studio known for major anime productions. Together, McDonald’s and Studio Pierrot created the first official WcDonald’s anime series.
Four short episodes were released weekly from February 26 through March 18, 2024. Each episode used a different anime genre:
| Episode | Anime style |
|---|---|
| The Race to WcDonald’s | Action |
| Love from Across the Booth | Romance |
| WcNuggets Space Frontier 3000 | Mecha and science fiction |
| The Wisdom of the Sauce | Fantasy |
The genre changes allowed the campaign to parody several familiar anime formats instead of treating “anime” as one uniform style. A racing adventure, a romantic story, a giant-robot episode, and a fantasy quest each gave WcDonald’s a different setting while keeping the restaurant and its menu at the center of the joke.

The shorts also gave McDonald’s something that a normal product advertisement usually lacks: an ongoing release schedule. Audiences had a reason to return each week, discuss the latest episode, and share clips or screenshots online.
The campaign left the screen and entered a Los Angeles dining experience
WcDonald’s was not limited to food wrappers and online videos. McDonald’s announced a two-day WcDonald’s Immersive Dining Experience in Los Angeles on March 9 and 10, 2024.
The event used projection mapping and tabletop projections based on the anime shorts, bringing the fictional restaurant’s visual world into a physical dining space. McDonald’s also announced grants and mentoring opportunities for three emerging anime artists, extending the campaign’s connection to the creative community beyond its own commercial advertising.
Did WcDonald’s increase McDonald’s sales?
McDonald’s said in its April 30, 2024, first-quarter results that the campaign ran in more than 30 markets, created “passionate brand excitement,” and lifted sales in the Chicken McNuggets category.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThat is a company-reported result, not an independent study showing that WcDonald’s alone caused the increase. The corporate statement does not establish how much of the reported lift came specifically from the campaign, as opposed to other marketing, pricing, seasonal, or market factors.
Still, the campaign’s structure explains why it could attract attention. It connected a familiar product to a visual reference that anime fans already understood, added a limited-time sauce, put artwork directly on the packaging, offered QR-code content, and released new animated episodes over several weeks. Each part created another reason to buy, scan, watch, collect, or share.

That makes WcDonald’s an example of how a brand can commercialize a fan-associated idea without simply copying the surface style of anime. McDonald’s used the parody name, but also built a small fictional world around it.
Was WcDonald’s created by one anime series?
There is no reliable basis in the campaign documentation to credit one particular anime series with inventing WcDonald’s. The stronger and more accurate explanation is that WcDonald’s had become a recurring fictional or parody restaurant across anime and manga.
The exact first appearance and chronology of the term are less firmly established by the primary campaign sources. So while viewers may recognize WcDonald’s from particular shows, it is misleading to present the entire idea as the creation of one series.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why the campaign mattered
McDonald’s has described the project as part of a “share the pen” approach: instead of treating fan culture as something separate from the brand, it allowed a fan-recognized idea to influence the campaign itself.
That approach worked because WcDonald’s was understandable at two levels. Someone unfamiliar with anime could see the inverted arches and understand the basic visual pun. Anime-literate viewers could recognize the deeper reference to fictional fast-food restaurants that appear throughout the medium.
The campaign also made the audience’s knowledge useful. Recognizing the reference became part of the experience, while the manga packaging, QR codes, genre-based shorts, and immersive event rewarded people who wanted to explore it further.

So, why did McDonald’s become WcDonald’s?
McDonald’s flipped its Golden Arches upside down to turn its familiar “M” into the “W” of WcDonald’s, a fictional fast-food brand long used as an anime and manga parody. The February 2024 promotion expanded that joke into limited-time Savory Chili WcDonald’s Sauce, WcNuggets, Acky Bright packaging, QR-linked manga, four Studio Pierrot anime shorts, and an immersive Los Angeles event.
It was a temporary promotional activation—not McDonald’s’ permanent new name—and the limited-time sauce should not be assumed to be available now.
