Mariah Carey used “prisoner” as a metaphor for what she has described as a controlling, restrictive marriage to music executive Tommy Mottola—not as a claim that she was literally incarcerated. The “Sing Sing” nickname for their mansion had a joking origin, Carey said, but she also described feeling constrained by the relationship.

Why did Mariah Carey say she felt like a prisoner?

In a 2018 interview with The Guardian, Carey compared married life with Mottola to being imprisoned at Sing Sing, the New York maximum-security prison. She described the strain of living under what she characterized as constant control: “When you have to control your own emotions constantly and be aware of every move you make and pretty much ask permission to exist it affects your life.” The comparison conveys her account of feeling restricted; the reporting does not establish literal confinement.

Carey and Mottola married in 1993, when she was 23 and he was 20 years older, according to The Guardian. Their personal relationship also overlapped with her career at the record company he led. In a November 1993 Los Angeles Times interview, Carey said the company was cautious about avoiding the appearance of giving her special treatment. That context shows the overlap she discussed; it does not establish a specific contractual arrangement.

What did “Sing Sing” mean?

In a 2005 CNN interview, Carey explained that the name was a joke about the mansion where she lived with Mottola. Asked about the nickname and whether she had been nearly imprisoned, she said: “To sing and sing. I’m a jokester, so of course, you know, Sing Sing, it kind of worked. It was a choice I made. I can’t blame him, because it was a relationship that I got into. Nobody held a gun to my head, I think.” She also called the relationship “stifling.”

The qualification matters: Carey said she chose the playful mansion nickname and reflected on her own decision to enter the relationship. That does not cancel out her account of feeling controlled. The nickname and the broader prisoner comparison are related, but they are not the same claim.

When did Carey and Mottola separate?

They married on June 5, 1993, according to CNN’s 2005 interview transcript. CNN describes Carey leaving her husband in December 1996; ABC News Australia’s 2020 memoir review places their separation in 1997 and says their divorce was finalized in the following years. These accounts distinguish her departure from the later separation and divorce milestones.

Carey’s 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, co-written with Michaela Angela Davis, offers a fuller first-person account. ABC News Australia’s review describes the mansion nickname as tongue-in-cheek and summarizes Carey’s account of having her movements monitored; those are details of her memoir, not independently established findings. CBS announced a Jane Pauley interview about Carey’s marriage, memoir and career.

What did Tommy Mottola say?

The Guardian reported that Mottola denied Carey’s claims. He declined CNN’s request for an interview in 2005 but sent a written comment. CNN quoted him saying, “over the course of my entire career, I have never commented on my personal life but I would like to say that I continue to be Mariah’s biggest fan.” He also praised her new CD and wished her success.
