Ana Gasteyer recalled that Lorne Michaels successfully pushed for “Schweddy Balls” to air before midnight, despite Standards and Practices’ concern about the sketch’s double entendre in an early slot. The account comes from Gasteyer, not a direct statement from Michaels.
Why was the sketch considered risky for an early slot?
Gasteyer said Standards and Practices did not want the sketch near the top of the show because racier material traditionally aired after midnight. The joke hinged on the word “balls,” but the characters treated it innocently: Delicious Dish hosts Margaret Jo McCullen and Teri Rialto interviewed baker Pete Schweddy about his holiday treats.
In an account reported by The Inquisitr from an Entertainment Weekly interview, Gasteyer said Michaels understood that the hosts were naïve about the word’s double meaning and fought to keep the sketch early. She credited him with advocating for work he believed deserved the slot. This is Gasteyer’s recollection; the report does not include a direct account from Michaels.
Who appeared in “Schweddy Balls,” and when did it air?
The sketch was part of the December 12, 1998 episode of Saturday Night Live, hosted by Alec Baldwin. Peacock lists it as Season 24, Episode 9, and identifies Baldwin as Pete Schweddy. Ana Gasteyer played Margaret Jo McCullen and Molly Shannon played Teri Rialto, the hosts of the fictional NPR food program Delicious Dish. The official Peacock episode listing describes the Delicious Dish segment; a transcript provides the character credits and dialogue.

What Gasteyer said about Michaels’ intervention
“Lorne very graciously fought for ‘Schweddy Balls,’” Gasteyer said. “Standards and Practices did not want to put it right at the top of the show. [Traditionally], racier content will play after midnight. …But [Michaels] so correctly understood that the characters were naive to the usage of the word ‘balls’ that he fought really hard and successfully to have it air before midnight, which I really appreciated. He always goes to the mat for work that deserves it.”

Her account frames the placement decision as a judgment about context: the sketch’s suggestive wording was delivered by characters who did not recognize its double meaning. Gasteyer said Michaels saw that innocence as central to the joke and advocated for an early airing.
