Logan Paul said Puerto Rico’s tax breaks were the primary reason he left Los Angeles; he also described the move as a chance to focus on boxing training. Jake Paul was reported to be attracted by Puerto Rico’s Act 60 benefits, while expressing a separate sense that the island felt like home. Those public explanations do not establish either brother’s tax qualification or actual savings.
Why Logan Paul said he moved
In an April 2021 account, TIME reported that Logan Paul announced in February 2021 he was leaving Los Angeles for Puerto Rico. He described the opportunity to focus on boxing training, but identified tax breaks as his primary reason.
TIME quoted him saying, “It’s getting crazy here in California, paying taxes,” and: “In Puerto Rico you’re motivated to do more and make more money because of the implications that come with it.” These are Logan’s stated views as reported at the time, not proof of the tax treatment he ultimately received.
What was reported about Jake Paul
El Nuevo Día reported in 2023 that Jake had moved to Puerto Rico about three years earlier and was attracted by Act 60 benefits. The publication’s headline also quotes him saying, “I feel like I finally found where I was meant to live.”

The reporting supports a distinction between the brothers’ public explanations: Logan was specifically reported to have called tax breaks his primary reason, while the account of Jake describes attraction to Act 60 and a personal feeling of belonging. It does not establish that Jake named taxes as his sole or primary motive.
Moving to Puerto Rico does not automatically qualify someone for tax benefits
The IRS says that qualifying for certain territorial tax benefits generally requires bona fide residency for the tax year. Under IRS Publication 570 (2025), that generally involves meeting the presence test, having no tax home outside the territory, and having no closer connection to the United States or another country. Residency depends on the facts and circumstances.

Tax obligations also do not simply disappear after a move. The IRS explains that U.S. citizens who are bona fide Puerto Rico residents generally file a Puerto Rico return reporting worldwide income and may also need a U.S. return. The U.S. return generally reports worldwide income while excluding Puerto Rico-source income, subject to exceptions and income-sourcing rules. A change in bona fide residence can also trigger Form 8898 filing requirements when applicable criteria are met. The precise result depends on the person’s circumstances.
The available accounts document reported motives and residence, not either brother’s tax returns, a tax authority’s eligibility determination, or realized savings. They therefore do not establish that either received a particular tax benefit.

Why the move has also drawn local concern
TIME’s 2021 reporting described residents’ concerns that incentive-driven arrivals could add to housing pressures, displacement, and a sense of exclusion. Those are community concerns reported by TIME, not a quantified finding about the effect of either Paul’s move or an estimate of the incentives’ overall impact.
