Eddie Murphy and Tracey Edmonds did not end a legally binding marriage after two weeks. They held a symbolic ceremony on New Year’s Day 2008 on a private island off Bora Bora, French Polynesia, and on January 16, 2008 they announced they would not pursue a legal ceremony and would remain friends. Their own explanation is brief: they said they had jointly decided a legal ceremony was “not necessary to define our relationship further.” Reports that the couple fought during their honeymoon come from secondhand accounts, not from the couple.
What the couple actually did
The “marriage” was a ceremony without legal force. Contemporary reports from January 2008 described the event near Bora Bora as symbolic and nonbinding, which is why no divorce was needed and why the couple could simply decline to follow up with a legal ceremony. The “two weeks” in headlines counts the time between the symbolic vows on January 1 and the public announcement on January 16. It is a convenient shorthand, not a measure of how long a legal marriage lasted.
That distinction matters for the question people usually ask, which is why the relationship changed so quickly. The short answer is that the couple chose not to convert the ceremony into a legal union and said they would stay friends. Beyond that statement, the public record does not establish the private reasons.

|---|---|---|
| July 2007 | Engagement reported | Contemporary press reports; the engagement itself was not documented by a primary statement in the sources reviewed |
| January 1, 2008 | Symbolic ceremony on a private island off Bora Bora, French Polynesia | Described as symbolic and nonbinding in contemporaneous coverage (CBS News/AP, January 17, 2008; UPI, January 16, 2008) |
| January 16, 2008 | Joint announcement that there would be no legal ceremony and that they would remain friends | Statement issued by publicist Arnold Robinson on behalf of both, as reported by UPI and CityNews Toronto (January 17, 2008) |
| January 17, 2008 | Person-to-person interview on CNN in which People staff writer David Caplan described honeymoon arguments | CNN transcript, “Eddie Murphy Single Again,” January 17, 2008; Caplan’s account is secondhand, not confirmed by the couple |
What the couple said
The joint statement, reproduced in multiple January 2008 reports, is the most reliable evidence of the couple’s own explanation. It reads:

“After much consideration and discussion, we have jointly decided that we will forego having a legal ceremony as it is not necessary to define our relationship further.”
It continues:
“While the recent symbolic union in Bora Bora was representative of our deep love, friendship and respect that we have for one another on a spiritual level, we have decided to remain friends.”
Two things stand out. First, the statement presents the decision as mutual and deliberate, not as a breakup following a dispute. Second, it describes the Bora Bora ceremony as a meaningful gesture in its own right, rather than a failed legal wedding. Neither sentence names a conflict, a date of disagreement, or a third party.
The honeymoon-argument account
The one specific account of friction comes from David Caplan, a People magazine staff writer, who was interviewed on CNN on January 17, 2008. He said the couple had been fighting and squabbling during the first week of their honeymoon. This is reported secondhand: it reflects Caplan’s understanding, not a statement from Murphy or Edmonds, and it was not repeated in the joint statement. It should be attributed to Caplan wherever it is cited.

How to describe the outcome accurately
- Accurate: Murphy and Edmonds held a symbolic, nonbinding ceremony on January 1, 2008, and announced on January 16 that they would not hold a legal ceremony and would remain friends.
- Accurate with attribution: A January 2008 CNN interview with People writer David Caplan reported that the couple had been arguing during their honeymoon.
- Inaccurate: “They divorced after two weeks” or “their legal marriage lasted two weeks.” No legal marriage was documented, so there was nothing to divorce.
- Inaccurate: Stating that the arguments caused the split as a confirmed fact. The couple did not say so.
Limits of the public record
All of the detailed reporting on this episode dates from January 2008, and the couple’s explanation is the single joint statement issued through their publicist. The available coverage does not include a direct named-person explanation from either of them beyond that statement, and it does not provide additional details about the private circumstances. Anyone describing the episode should rely on the statement’s wording and avoid filling the gap with speculation.
Rank #4
For a quick reference, the framing used in 2008 coverage included headlines such as “Murphy & wife split after two weeks,” “Friends, Not Spouses,” and “marriage over already.” Those headlines share the same compression of the symbolic ceremony into a marriage, so they are best read as headline shorthand.

Most of the confusion comes from treating the Bora Bora event as a wedding. Because it was symbolic, the couple faced no legal consequences when they stopped pursuing a formal union. The question of why it ended is therefore less about a marriage failing and more about a couple deciding not to take the next step. The statement frames that choice as a joint decision to keep the relationship as friendship, and that framing is the most accurate summary available from the reporting.
